The G&L ASAT Classic Commemorative Edition (also known as the Leo Fender Commemorative) from the early 1990s (produced primarily from 1991 to 1993) was a limited-run, premium tribute to G&L founder Leo Fender following his passing in 1991. Based on the ASAT Classic platform—G&L’s refined evolution of the classic Telecaster design—these guitars featured a double-bound swamp ash body in Cherryburst finish, a bound birdseye maple neck (often flamed), G&L Magnetic Field Design (MFD) single-coil pickups, and extensive triple-plated gold hardware, including the bridge, tuners, control plate, knobs, pole pieces, mirror gold pickguard, and even factory-installed .009-gauge Maxima gold-plated strings to complete the luxurious theme. A special commemorative decal on the upper bout displayed Leo’s signature, birth and death years (1909–1991), and a rose motif, while the engraved neck plate read “XX of 1000.” In practice, production was limited to roughly 250–350 units due to ownership changes and legal settlements following BBE’s acquisition. Originally listing at around $3,000, these highly collectible instruments celebrate Leo’s final designs with exceptional craftsmanship.
