This is a 1988 Greco SS63-60S SG Special model from Greco's Mint Collection series, which is a clone of the 1961-1965 Gibson SG Special. This model originally appeared in the 1982 Catalog, the beginning of the Mint Collection series, as the SS63-50S, but was renamed to the SS63-60S in 1988 (this year), and then later became the SS-600S and SS-65S in 1990, and then finally the SS-80S in 1992.

This guitar was made in the famous Fujigen factory in Japan, as evidence by the serial number, control cavity routings, bevels... Greco guitars are nearly synonymous with Fujigen - nearly all of Greco's guitars, especially in the 80's and early 90's were made by Fujigen. However, at the very end of the 1980's and 1990, Greco had Tokai make some of their instruments - including some of the SG's.

I'm a big SG fan, and I've had a few different MIJ SG's from different brands (Greco, Tokai, Edwards, Burny, Aria, Epiphone, Orville, Bacchus, etc...), and I'd say without question, from what I've seen, Fujigen did an amazing job with all of the details of their SG models, including the bevels and the carve - they're done very well. The bevels and shaping on this guitar and hardware are closer to a Gibson custom shop, rather than a Gibson USA standard.

This one appears to be made with a 2 piece mahogany body mated to a 1 piece mahogany neck, that has no heel cap, and has glued on headstock "ears" or "wings" - just like Gibson - with long neck tenon, and is made from beautiful selections of mahogany. The seam on this 2 piece body is really hard to see since it's done so well. The stripy mahogany helps to hide it, and it can really only be seen on the bottom of the body.

The original Greco HOT LICK P-90's sound excellent. Buttery smooth, great definition, articulate but has a good amount of grit. They use 2 shine Alnico magnets in each pickup. Even though they are single coils (like all P-90's) they are wax potted to help cut down on any noise or squeal. They have that snappy single coil feel, with a nice a smooth top end - not harsh at all. They can handle that classic rock and roll and blues tone really well, and respond well to volume and tone pot adjustments.

Note: These pickups have pretty short lead wires on them, so removing them to take pics is difficult.

This guitar appears to be all original, and arrived to me in overall very good shape, with a few chips and dents in the finish here and there, and the nickel hardware has a consistent tarnished patina to it (like most vintage nickel gets) - it has been played but not abused.

The neck on this one is chunkier than most SG's I have had - it starts out relatively thin at 22.5mm at the 1st fret, but gets to about 24.9mm at the 12th fret. It has a full "C" shape carve that really fills the hand - and it's a slightly wider neck than most, making it a joy to play on if you like big & wide necks. It's incredible stable.

The fretboard is dark brown rosewood with a a beautiful grain all the way up the fretboard, with silver acrylic dot inlays.

The 22 medium jumbo frets that have very little play wear with only minor fret wear on the lower 7 frets on the plain strings, and overall there is still have lots of life left in them and the guitar plays well up and down the entire neck.

Like all the guitars I sell, I test, thoroughly clean, and setup my guitars completely before I list them. Anything that is missing, damaged, or non original is mentioned in the listing.

I setup all my Gibson style guitars to Gibson factory specs - including neck relief, action, pickup height, intonation, and tailpiece height. So this guitar will be ready to play out of the box (after you tune it up - I ship my guitars with the strings loosened).

Comes with a new quality made Profile G05TX gig bag.

Overall, this is a great player grade guitar, that looks, plays and sounds great.

If you're looking for a vintage Japanese SG these early Mint Collection Greco SG's are hard to beat - add this one to your collection today!

CONDITION ------------

Overall it's in very good player grade shape.

I've tried to capture all of the flaws in the photos and in the description.

Over the entire body of the guitar, top, back, sides, neck and headstock, there are many dings, dents, scratches, chips, hazing, and swirling, particularly on the top and sides of the body.

The nickel hardware, bridge, tailpiece, tuners, and screws all have some very slight form of corrosion, pitting, scratches, although not too much for the age, and they do have a consistent patina on them.

All of the black plastics have typical scratches, swirling and pick marks on them.

All of the non branded Kluson style tuners work properly.

Around the strap buttons there's some strap marks/swirling.

The 22 medium jumbo frets that have very little play wear with only minor fret wear on the lower 7 frets on the plain strings, and overall there is still have lots of life left in them and the guitar plays well up and down the entire neck.

The truss rod works as expected, with room in both directions.
