Sonor Phonic centennial/phonic 90s reissue Late 70s and mid 90s - Rosewood inside and out on rack tom and bass drum, oak on floor tom
This is a well matched set although the floor tom is a later generation as can be seen from the badge. The shells are 9 ply beech, made in germany in sonor's famous Horst Link period. The hoops are all original as far as i know and will clean up to a lovely mirror chrome.
The drums are structurally sound though there have been hardware changes to the tom mount system on both bass drum and rack tom. Also the aftermarket floor tom legs aren't the best. The kick drum is the most beautiful and includes the internal wood and felt muffler with handy tensioner, also has the original reso head, though it's a little tired at this point. It is missing one rubber foot.
The tom mount had been swapped out when i found this kit 20 odd years ago. I just put the 14x10 rack tom on a snare stand tbh. There are scratches all over but nothing too deep. Could easily be cleaned up and brought up to a really nice finish. I will refurb the whole kit and relist at a higher price in the autumn if it does not sell at this price point, so grab a bargain now if you want a fantastic sounding and looking drum kit for a fraction of the price of the current equivalents, it just needs (and deserves) a little tlc.
I have recorded this kit with great results in the past but sadly can't find the monitor mixes and the project got shelved. It sounded thunderous in 2008/9 recorded onto 2" tape, both warm and full but with that signature sonor punch. Very reluctant sale but i own more kits than i can justify at this point.
I also have the much loved 70s vintage D-454 snare with the ferromanganese seamless steel shell which is effortlessly powerful and articulate. Sonor's best response to the ludwig 400. Imo it outperforms many luddies, (speaking as a long term wfl/classic owner) and i have been asked to sell it to more than one pro drummer in the past. This i will list separately soon but it is the perfect match for the shell set so anyone interested in combining them as one sale just message me on here to register interest. It is in good/very good condition just missing the plastic sticker badge they briefly used in the 70s for some reason.
This is a highly versatile and stylish, recordable, giggable, german made kit with an increasingly rare and attractive veneer. The oak veneer on the floor tom blends so well with the faded, older rosewood that only the different badge gives it away. In terms of construction i think it is identical.
Skins are all ok but could be fresher.
The kit is currently packed safely away so I can't offer more photos at the moment.
This listing is for the three drum shell set: 22x14, 16x16, 14x10. Serious offers considered.
