Golden Age COMP-3A: Fast, Punchy Optical Compression

The Golden Age Audio COMP-3A is a single-channel optical compressor and leveler, built with a fully discrete signal path and transformer-balanced input and output. It delivers quick, punchy control that flatters drums, bass, guitars, and vocals while keeping the source sounding natural. Where the tube design in the family is smooth and rounded, the COMP-3A leans brighter and more immediate. Two main controls keep the whole process simple and repeatable.

A Discrete Signal Path With No Integrated Circuits

Tone starts with how the audio is amplified, and here nothing gets in the way. The COMP-3A uses only discrete components such as resistors, capacitors, and transistors, with no integrated circuits in the signal path, the way audio gear was built before chips became common. That approach is prized because it tends to preserve the character and perceived quality that many modern designs smooth away. On clean digital recordings, that added analog personality is often exactly what a track is missing.

Electro-Optical Gain Control

The COMP-3A reacts to music in a way that feels organic rather than mechanical. It uses an electro-optical attenuator, a gain-control stage where an electroluminescent panel lights a photocell and the light level sets how much the signal is reduced. This produces program-dependent attack and release that speed up on transients and relax on sustained material. The effect is compression that grabs quickly yet lets go musically.

Transformer-Balanced Connections

Getting audio in and out cleanly is part of the sound. The COMP-3A uses two different transformers, each optimized for its purpose, so it can drive almost any load, balanced or unbalanced. Transformer coupling adds a subtle weight and cohesion that suits aggressive sources especially well. XLR and TRS jacks are provided on both input and output for flexible connections.

Selectable Output Loading for Tone Shaping

Small changes in the output stage can meaningfully change a compressor's voice. An internal jumper selects the output transformer loading resistors, which shifts the high-frequency response of the unit. Choose one setting for a brighter, more open top end or another for a slightly softer feel to match the source. It is a set-and-forget tweak that helps the COMP-3A sit right in different rooms and mixes.

Two Controls Plus Sidechain HF

Fast operation keeps you focused on the performance. Gain sets make-up level and Peak Reduction sets the amount of compression, so a useful result is only two moves away. A sidechain HF control makes the detector more sensitive to mid and high frequency content, letting you tailor how the unit responds to bright material. That combination covers a wide range of jobs without a steep learning curve.

Metering, Bypass, and Stereo Linking

Clear feedback makes fast decisions easier. A big meter switches between gain reduction and output level at two reference points, and a hardwire bypass switch enables instant before-and-after checks. For stereo work, a link jack and switch let two COMP-3A units operate as a matched pair so the image stays centered. This makes it as comfortable on a stereo bus as on a single track.

Studio-Ready Build and Format

The COMP-3A is made to live in a working rack. It ships in a compact 2U half-rack chassis, and two units can be mounted together with the optional 19-inch rack kit. An external power supply keeps the transformer and audio circuits free from supply interference for lower noise. Solid build quality means it is ready for years of regular studio use.
