MG Bass JB1 SPALTED MAPLE 5-string bass, Made in USA, SPALTED MAPLE top, ASH body, 3-piece MAPLE neck, EBONY fretboard, BARTOLINI pickups and preamp, Italia Leather Straps 4” wide Acorn Amber strap, GATOR GTSA-GTRBASS TSA hardshell case.
This eye-popping JB1 bass was a special order. I purchased it from the original owner several years ago. The original owner barely even used it. The frets show virtually no wear, and the rest of the bass looks very close to new as well with no visible scratches, dings, or signs of use. The Spalted Maple pickup covers really send the appearance of this fine instrument over the top. It's really the cat's meow if you are into Spalted Maple.
I never made the move up from a 4-string to a 5-string, so the bass has been sitting in climate-controlled storage unplayed since I bought it roughly 5 years ago. So sad. It's time to let this amazing bass go back into the wild where it will finally get played.
If you go through the bass builder function on the MG Bass website, you will find a JB1 5-string costs $3590 without any additional options. This particular JB1 has $650 in options: $100 Ebony Fretboard, $400 Spalted Maple pickup covers, $150 Hipshot Solid bridge.
The current MG Bass build calculator shows a $2150 deposit due in order to start the build. This deposit would be followed up by another $2090 due upon completion of the build. So, if you were to build this bass today, the total price would be $4240.
Adding in the Italia Leather strap at $120, along with a Gator hardshell case at $190, and the total for this bass package if purchased new would be $4550.
If you live in a state that charges sales tax, the difference in the taxes paid on $3300 versus $4550 would also be an additional $100 at a sales tax rate of 8%, making the effective difference $1350.
Assuming equal shipping costs, this used MG Bass JB1 bass package is priced $1350 or 29% less than what it would cost to buy new. As you can see by the pics, the bass is so close to new condition, you might not even be able to tell the difference either.
Additionally, the JB1 SPALTED MAPLE bass listed for sale here is already built, so buying this one would save you months of wait time versus placing a new-build order.

NOTE: Neck thickness and Fretboard Radius specs were not provided by the manufacturer. The measurements were made here in this shop, so there could be slight variances in the provided numbers.
The weight of the bass by itself as measured on the shop postal scale is 11 lbs 4 oz with a 9V battery installed. This scale is frequently compared to the calibrated scales at The UPS Store and has always matched their weight measurements within +/- 0.2 ounces.
Also please note the nut width on this 5-string bass is 49 mm, which is 4 mm wider than a typical 5-string bass. The neck shape, sizing, and profile are similar to the graphite neck on a G. Gould GGi5 bass, wider than standard in width but thinner in the C profile. It's more like an elongated C, flat on the back to keep the neck thin.
Additional Note: Although it may appear the headstock is scuffed on the top (flat) edge in the pictures, this is not the case. The lighter spots in the wood on the very top edge are natural coloring differences within the wood and are beneath the satin finish. The satin finish on the top of the headstock is in perfect shape, as it was when the bass was manufactured.
Even though this bass is had very little use and is in amazing condition, it is being sold as-is with no warranty expressed or implied. The SPALTED MAPLE JB1 5-string will be given a full functionality test into a bass amplifier prior to shipping to ensure all electronic components operate normally without any pops, crackles, or other abnormal sounds being generated from the instrument.
On a side note, this guitar was only handled, tested, and photographed while nitrile gloves were being worn, as is shop policy. This protocol keeps the guitars clean, as new, and free of fingerprints.

This shop does not offer a 'try it first' option. If you buy this part or piece of gear and for some reason do not like its sound, operation, functionality, fit, feel, finish, coloration, or whatever else, it will be your turn to list the item as being for sale from your Reverb shop. No returns. By purchasing this item, you are confirming that you agree and accept all the terms of sale outlined in this listing.
NOTE: The Reverb ‘Make Offer’ button was intentionally de-selected when this listing was created. Pricing is set to what seems fair and reasonable based on other similar items listed or historical sales amounts. Pricing is based on the piece of gear itself, its availability in the open market, and its condition. Prices may be adjusted up or down periodically depending on the market. Please do not contact the shop with offers of less than the current listed price. Additionally, the shop is in the process of ‘thinning the herd’ in preparation for an upcoming out-of-state move and therefore is not able to entertain offers of trades either.
Shipping will be to the continental lower 48 USA states only, Hawaii and Alaska excluded. Per Reverb's shipping rules, the package will be issued a shipping label within 3 days (72 hours) after the time of purchase. At this point, the gear is considered shipped by the Reverb system, even if the package has not been scanned in by the courier or physically loaded onto a truck. Buyers will be notified as soon as the package is physically in the hands of the courier. A tracking number should become active on the Reverb website within 24 hours after the drop-off time.
Smaller boxes containing parts, Euro rack modules, or effects pedals can usually be shipped via USPS Ground Advantage. Larger boxes containing rack-mounted gear, guitars, or basses normally ship via UPS Ground or FedEx Ground. Both couriers give estimates of up to 5 DAYS in transit after receiving the package. The day the package is dropped off or picked up by the courier is not included in this estimate, so this adds 1 MORE DAY to the total shipping estimate.
Doing the math, 3 DAYS to ship + 1 DAY for pickup or processing at the courier's hub + 5 DAYS in transit + 1 Sunday = 10 DAYS total. Although purchased items have made it to their new owners within 7 DAYS, it can take 10 DAYS or MORE from the time of purchase for a package to reach the destination address. How long the delivery takes is dependent on multiple factors, including the distance from Loveland CO to the destination address, courier slowdowns due to adverse weather conditions, unexpected courier delays, and mistakes made by the courier while the package is in transit. By purchasing this piece of gear, you are acknowledging the facts stated above and confirming that you are accepting the estimates provided therein regarding the delivery of your package.
Reverb Safe Shipping FULL COVERAGE insurance costs range from 1.0% to 3.0% of the selling price. This cost, along with the cost of all packaging materials, is included in the shipping total shown in the listing. Per the shipping insurance rules, a signature will be required for delivery.
All parts and pieces of gear will be professionally packaged inside a sturdy cardboard box prior to shipping, with ample space and padding surrounding the item. Any open spaces will be filled with Styrofoam peanuts, cornstarch peanuts, Kraft paper, foam, and/or bubble wrap for maximum protection of the part or piece of gear.
