If I could use one word to describe Robert Taylor's AB bass series, it would be exquisite. These basses represent, in my opinion, the pinnacle of his guitar-making abilities and I'm personally glad he used a bass guitar to exhibit his vision and skills. These are incredible instruments that are among the most innovative and expressive in his arsenal of inventory.
This AB-3 is an extraordinary bass in both construction and sound. The low end is warm yet taut and the highs are crisp and bright. I tended to roll the high end back a bit to even out the "bite" and give the bass more of a round and "supporting" tone rather than a lead one. The neck is thin, fast and so, so easy on the left hand. It's almost as if you want to apply an upright technique when playing the bass and you might find yourself tending to explore unique patterns due to the different feel and sound of the instrument. That in itself is a very pleasurable thing to experience. Playing something new...
Being a gloss black bass, every minute imperfection will be magnified a thousand times, but simply put, this is a very clean, 26-year-old instrument. There are some very light, fine surface scratches and a few small dings, but the bass has been very well cared for and it shows. And, there's just something "Rock n Roll" about strapping on a black bass- Gene Simmons did it for half a century to great success. The bass has been detailed, restrung with new D'Addario Phosphor Bronze .045-.100 strings and given a new battery. The case was also cleaned and is in excellent working condition.
This is one of the more interesting and unique offerings in the current Taylor bass market and we're sure that you will be quite pleased when you finally get your hands on it. If finding the right instrument to express your joy of playing is the hardest part of the journey, then we hope we've just made that finding a little easier...
