About This Listing

Heard y'all like player grade vintage!

Here for sale is a 1972-ish Gibson SG Special with a lot of upgrades. This is not a collector, but it is one HECK of a gig-ready instrument. This thing is a PLAYER - it looks, sounds and feels like a rock 'n roll machine. When I got it, it needed some work - the biggest of which was a refret. I got Dave Johnson at Scale Model Guitars to give this thing a fresh set of vintage correct frets. He did an astounding job, and if you are keeping score at home, yes that means the frets on this guitar are BRAND NEW!

Here are some other features:

  • For some reason, it has SG Deluxe Truss Rod Cover.
  • Comes with a vintage Bigsby and "harmonica" bridge.
  • Upgraded to vintage Dimarzio Bridge P-90 sized humbucker pup by a previous owner. The bridge pickup sounds great and phases pretty well with the neck pickup. The original bridge pickup comes with it as well.
  • Upgraded Tuners - 1990s / 2000s Grover Imperial tuners. I had them in my private parts stash, new old stock. (Packaging included)
  • Once again, complete refret by Dave Johnson at Scale Model Guitars (Original Frets Included)

The serial dates it between late 1970 and early 1973. The pot codes date from late 1972, so it is likely a 1972 or 1973. This one is sort of a weird special variant, I was not able to find a ton like it online. The original color was Heritage Cherry, and you can still see patches of the red under the bridge and such. The finish has faded over the years to more of a Walnut / Mocha color, though, which looks great. If you are a serious, gigging musician, this is now a working man's vintage guitar. The last SG you will ever need - this thing belongs with a gigging or studio musician.

As always, we cleaned it up, polished the finish, flushed the electronics, changed the strings and set the action low and smooth. This guitar has modern hardshell case, and I pack my guitars up tight and insure every package for the full purchase amount.

Got questions? Shoot me a message, I love nerding out with other gearheads!
