About This Listing

Psycho Killer! Qu'est-ce que c'est! What an epic short scale bass from the famed Matsumoku factory! This thing is totally unique, it totally rips, it sounds awesome, and it's in almost brand new condition with the original case.  Has Tina Weymouth vibes, a short scale but very powerful and musical bass!

Short scale basses are the secret to getting the bass to sit right on a track. The world has come around to this concept with the popularity of Mustang basses like the Justin Meldal Johnson bass. A bigger and longer scale bass may sound bigger on its own in comparison but in the context of all the other instruments it can get lost. The short scale bass is a well baited hook with solid intelligence of where the fish are versus a big ocean trawler that rips up the coral along the sea floor. Big basses like the Gibson Grabber and the Rickenbacker can sound huge when you solo them but they can compete with the rest of the instruments when you put the whole thing together. A short scale always sits right perfectly where the bass should.

As an instrument, this thing absolutely rips. Message me for a video. Made in the Matsumoku factory in the late 60's/early 70's alongside Univox, Greco, early Ibanez stuff (the good ones), and a whole myriad of other guitars. This is most likely a pre-Univox design, as in built by the department in the Matsumoku factory that later became Univox. The body and neck have some epic weight and chunk to it for how big it is, it feels like a formidable force on the strap, The action is super low but full of punchy tone. There's a lot of aesthetic condition issues, lots of natural checking and play wear. There's some notes that are a little buzzy, and way up on the low E past the 14th fret it frets out, but getting up that high is a tall order on any bass. The intonation is actually really good! It stays in tune, the pickup sounds awesome, it feels great and really inspiring to play. It's a totally killer bass through and through. All of the guitars in the Matsumoku world have some quirks, in this one it's some buzzy frets. It's a killer instrument, but just be aware it's not a slick modern production guitar. Great bass!
