So much of this vintage Mosrite Celebrity bass is just outstanding! From the slim neck that feels great, and the desirable 30.25 scale length neck for that traditional and warm hollow body tone, to the beautiful and consistent sunburst finish with a back sporting a gorgeous flame! All the electronics work~thanks to tap-testing the pickups, and still resting in the original, lizard-like textured case……but…….
it’s obvious the tuning keys are missing, as well as the Mosrite volume and tone control knobs and the 3-way switch tip. Due to the slight imprint of the original machine heads on the back of the headstock and it’s screw holes, I can say with certainty, they were the original Mosrite ‘ducks feet’ tuning keys. If by chance the new owner has a working set, then rest assured no extra screw holes would be present and visible upon remounting..they’ll fit right in. However, if another style of tuning keys were to be used, then most likely there would be visible unused screw holes.
Strictly out of curiosity, I removed the neck only to find a very faint letter B in the mortise and tenon neck joint pocket…most likely for a ‘Bass’ designation. The serial number on the orange oval tag is K-0163. The impression on the end of the neck is L0163. The frets have a lot of life left to them…who knows how long this bass has been without strings? The binding is intact all around, except for a 2 fret section on the bottom of the neck…it split and is barely hanging on. The truss rod cover on the headstock appears to be Mosrite, but it’s short in length and not quite covering all of the truss rod routing. Also, it looks like a white crayon was used to highlight the Mosrite name on the pickup covers (I’ve seen that before, but it can be removed if not wanted). The tip top of the outside of the case looks a bit charred and the retaining straps for the ‘lid’ are severed, but it works…all rusted latches, hinges, and handle. It’s solid.
As I mentioned above, the sunburst finish is beautiful, as evidenced in the pics, but it does have some nicks, unwanted scratches, and checking present. I’d say fairly consistent with its age. A good finish compound and the results would likely be absolutely stunning!
With all that being said, this beauty is definitely playable..…just need the keys, please!
Thank you for considering .
