The phrase 'rare' is often used lightly about instruments - but a search of the Reverb archives finds none of these previously listed, nor have I seen another one for sale even in Japan, in the past 5 years. So at least: not a common one, this!

It is an Aria Pro II Steve Bailey model, 6 string fretless, built in Japan in the Aria Pro custom shop. The 'standard' version of these was produced in Korea - but this one was made in Aria's Custom Shop in Japan (indicated by the inlay around the 24th fret position).

Fingerboard is ebony, with a transparent coating. I'm not sure whether this is polyester or epoxy - but sound is similar to what you'd get on a Pedulla coated fingearboard (or more recently: Crews Maniac Sound's versions).

Due to its age, the bass has various scratches nad marks on the body, and some traces on the fingerboard also. None of these influence playability.

The pre-amp seems to be original, and very easy to dial in a tone that accentuates harmonics (if you're familiar with Bailey's playing style - this would make a lot of sense!). Overall construction is very solid; harmonics sustain well, and the fretless notes bloom nicely.

I've not touched the truss-rod since purchase, and neck has remained stable across all 4 seasons in Tokyo over the past few years. Current setup has a small amount of relief, with an action of 2.25mm on the Low-B, and around 1.75mm on high-C.
