Johnny Music FAQ/tip: In the old days, a "14-58" set would be the HEAVY string set, while 13-56 is "medium", 12-54 "medium-light" and 11-52 the "light" set; this tradition of string-gauging is largely carried-on to this day by most string manufacturing companies. However, in modern practice with more-precise manufacturing standards, the 10-50 set is extra-light, 11-52 is the light, 12-54 is the medium, and the 13-56 for practically all intents and purposes, is the heavy acoustic folk guitar string set; the 14-58 is an outdated concept of the heavy acoustic guitar string set, and may be regarded as EXTRA-HEAVY in the modern play/practice, but is very rarely used (practically no market demand - typically assembled from custom-gauge singles). Many players may find the 12-54 still a bit too heavy, and the 11-52 a bit too flimsy, thus a TRUE MEDIUM acoustic folk guitar string set would be ergonomically-fulfilled typically by the new fractional 11.5-54 gauge set made possible with modern precision machinery/manufacturing, and currently available in Ernie Ball's EARTHWOOD 80/20 and Phosphor Bronze series of acoustic string sets.
