Johnny Music FAQ/tip: In the old days, a "14-58" set would be the HEAVY string set, while 13-56 is "medium", 12-54 "medium-light" and 11-52 the "light" set; this tradition of string-gauging is largely carried-on to this day by most string manufacturing companies. However, in modern practice with more-precise manufacturing standards, the 10-50 set is extra-light, 11-52 is the light, 12-54 is the medium, and the 13-56 for practically all intents and purposes, is the heavy acoustic folk guitar string set; the 14-58 is genrally an outdated concept of the heavy acoustic guitar string set, and may be regarded as EXTRA-HEAVY in the modern play/practice, but is very rarely used (practically no market demand - typically assembled from custom-gauge singles). HERE NOW in the 21st century, with widespead accesibility to high-precision manufacturing standards, players who find the 12-54 still a bit too heavy, and the 11-52 a bit too flimsy, can go with the consistent precision quality of the new fractional 'TRUE MEDIUM' acoustic folk guitar string set found in the Ernie Ball Earthwood 11.5-54 gauge, as well as the 12.5-56 gauge set if the 12-54 is a bit too flimsy and the 13-56 a bit too tight. These are now available in both of Ernie Ball's EARTHWOOD 80/20 and PHOSPHOR BRONZE series of acoustic string sets. The new 'True Medium' and 'True Medium-Heavy' concept offer even more diverse choices in the Electric Guitar world with Ernie Ball's new custom gauge nickel-wound Slinky® lineup (see hotlinks above).
