Steve’s notes: Video added 9/30. This is truly incredible. Back story: In the late 60s-early 70s Gretsch began the migration from the “round badge” to the “stop sign badge”. Right at the transition, they introduced two new finishes: red marine pearl and green marine pearl. These finishes were only in the color line for a couple of years, so sets are rare. The sets that usually surface are the likes of 12/13/16/22 (or 20), and sometimes 13/16/22, and rarely 12/14/20. Some have round badge and some have SSB. This is SSB. The set we have here is one-of-a-kind and was ordered exactly as you see it. The set has 8x12, 9x13, 10x14 and 12x15 rack toms. 16x16 and 16x18 floor toms, and two 14x24 bass drums. Now, typically a set like this would have a double tom mount on each bass drum. But, the double tom mount in this era was not very adjustable (as you can see in the photo with the double tom floor stand). So, to make this set more playable the customer ordered it as follows: His left side bass drum had the Gretsch rail mount, and the 12 was mounted there. The 13 and 14 were mounted on the double tom floor stand. The 15 was mounted on the right side bass drum on which another Gretsch rail mount was added. All factory ordered. This makes the set extremely playable with all 4 rack toms. And, the ingenious part is this: The left side bass drum has the rail in what we would call the “normal” spot. As a result, you can take this bass drum and mount one rack tom on it and take the 16 floor and you have a great 3 pc 12/16/24 for a smaller gig. You could even have a crazy Bonham style 3 piece with the 12x15, 16x18 and 14x24. Unlimited possibilities here. We’ll even include the “spade” for the tom holder to use if you want to mount the 13 or 14 from the bass drum.
The drums are in excellent condition. Tone controls we’re removed, but Gretsch still makes these and we can get them for you if you want to purchase them. There is a bit of seam lift on two drums and we will glue that back down. We will have more pics later and I will do a video with this set. This is the only green marine pearl set that has ever surfaced and this is a factory ordered configuration. Incredible kit.
