This rare and extraordinary 5-string electric bass was designed and built by Ned Steinberger and the equally gifted John Bolin. While Ned is a household name, John makes super high-quality instruments for bands like The Rolling Stones, ZZ Top, Steve Miller, and a whole bunch more. Superb playing and sounding, the Bolin NS Design NS-5 has no equal in the electric bass 5-string world in my experience… and now that they're out of production, you're really hard-pressed to locate one!
Say hello to serial number 0127 - the blonde flame top and neck are eye candy and I can't overemphasize the beauty of this single-cutaway design. The fold-out strap arm is sturdy and doesn't feel like some sort of afterthought - it balances the 7+lb, 35" scale length to perfection. Add in the perfectly placed 18V EMG double coil pickup with a sweepable mid cut/boost, plus the piezo bridge and you're in tone heaven. So many gorgeous sonic variations to match the visual beauty. The photos and short iPhone video show and tell the entire story of this excellent work of musical art. Plays like a dream, too.

I've seen other Bolin NS guitar and bass finishes in dark brown, blue, gray, and even green. However, this clear blonde NS-5 was heads and shoulders above all the others, and that's why I bought it immediately... I can't recall ever seeing another. Studio life has been kind over the years, and there's very little wear to share about. It's almost impossible to photograph: minor finish mars, small bumps on the back of the neck, and a rough spot on a tuner's edge. Nothing that deters playability and most cannot be seen. Out of an over abundance of caution I will rate the excellent to mint NS-5 as very good.
We really take care of our gear.
If you want or need more photos, just let me know. I'm new to Reverb but have been in the industry for 40+ years and will gladly provide references. As to shipping, everything gets safely and securely packed and almost always ships by the next business day. I *do my very best* to ship same day whenever humanly possible, because I appreciate getting my purchases quickly, too! Also, I love receiving well-packed gear, so that's how I try to always pack for you! Tracking information will be provided as soon as it’s generated by Reverb's shipping label system. Likewise, we appreciate immediate payments when agreeing to buy our items (unless you’ve made prior arrangements beforehand).
If you’re in the Nashville area, please come by the studio to see the NS-5 in all its glory for yourself.
As with all our rare instruments and electronics, we’re offering this Bolin NS Design bass as shown, as-is, as described, no returns. It’s just as reliably and accurately described as all the other gear I've recently sold on Reverb - plus the Kubicki Ex-Factor bass, vintage pair of Langevin 251a EQs, ‘75 original MXR Phase 90, lots of vintage TC Electronic pedals, Roland PG-300, PG-800, PG-1000, Korg REI, Waldorf Microwave XT, and MicroQ that went to happy, new owners. There are many other new happy owners, too. Scroll through our shop's reviews and feedback for what other people say about PlethoraTone.
This Bolin is among the first of *hundreds* of unusual synth, guitar, bass, and electronic items our studio will soon be posting. Check out our comprehensive gear list on our website for upcoming hints.
The final photograph gives a clue to some of the other gear to come, and these items aren’t included in this Bolin NS-5 listing. There's also a Yamaha TX-816, an incredible Bob Moog designed Crumar Spirit coming, as well as a Roland SH-1000, too. There's also currently listed an insanely rare Kramer Ripley Stereo Bass, Yamaha Pacifica USA-2 Custom, plus a whole lot more!
Thanks for looking. Please shout if we can help in any way whatsoever!
