The concept behind the jazz bass originally comes from two directions. The
first being an emphasis on a brighter and more focused treble response.
The second idea was to make the neck more narrow and rounded, to appeal
to - you guessed it - jazz players. The end result is one of the most
iconic basses in the music world, played by artists of virtually every
genre. Despite its success, Leo Fender started G&L with the notion
that every one of his great designs was eligible for improvement, and
that philosophy lives on with the 5-string JB-5.
The neck on the JB-5 is what they call their 'Modern C' profile. It has a 1.7/8" width at the nut and a 9.5" radius. The comfortable C shape is easy to navigate, and the rounder 9.5" radius helps to manage the 5-string width. While no longer a narrow "JB" nut, the relatively shallow .810" depth at the first fret make this bass very easy for players to adapt to. Unlike like a lot of 5-strings, it does not feel as though you are playing a tree trunk, and reaching
across the fretboard occurs quite naturally, even for a diehard four-string player. The light satin tint finish is both functional and attractive, and has a
smooth dry surface that makes it easy to slide up and down the neck.
The tone of the G&L Alnico V Vintage Jazz pickups is exactly what you
would hope for. The low end is smooth and focused, there is ample
midrange punch -- and depending on how you adjust the pickup balance --
enough high end snap to cut through even the most dense rhythm sections.
The classic two-volume knob arrangement makes it easy to achieve quick
tonal changes without losing output. Turning down one pickup does not
cut volume, it just varies the tonal balance. Yes, there is also a tone
control, but it's almost superfluous in most situations.
As the jazz bass was intended, the G&L JB-5 is a perfect fit for the player who needs to stand out in the rhythm section. Whether you're playing jazz, funk, reggae or rock, the G&L JB-5 can hold the groove and look awfully good doing it.
