Neumann EA 4: The Official Suspension Upgrade Every TLM Owner Reaches For

The TLM 103 (and every other Neumann TLM-series microphone) ships standard with the SG 2 rigid stand mount. The SG 2 is exactly what it sounds like — a metal swivel that bolts the mic to a stand. It works, it is rugged, and it has zero ability to isolate the microphone from mechanical noise. The EA 4 is the official Neumann answer to that limitation: a purpose-built elastic suspension shockmount with a Neumann-sized cradle and replaceable elastic bands, sold in either nickel to match the standard TLM 103 or matte black to match the TLM 103 mt, TLM 102 bk, and TLM 107 bk. If your studio shares a floor with foot traffic, HVAC, an HVAC compressor, a refrigerator, a busy street, or anyone walking past the microphone — the EA 4 is the part you are missing.

Why Elastic Suspension Matters on a TLM-Series Microphone

Large-diaphragm condenser microphones are extraordinarily sensitive to mechanical vibration. The capsule that delivers the TLM 103's 7 dB-A self-noise floor is also sensitive enough to register a footfall through the floor, a desk thump, a boom-arm adjustment, or a passing truck. With the rigid SG 2 mount, those vibrations transfer directly into the microphone body and become low-frequency rumble in the recording. The EA 4 suspends the microphone on four elastic bands that absorb mechanical energy across the audible spectrum. The audible result on the recording is straightforward: stand thumps stop. Floor rumble stops. The audible noise floor of the room replaces the audible noise floor of the building. For voiceover, audiobook narration, podcast recording, and any tracking application where the microphone is on a floor stand or boom arm — the difference is the difference between session-grade audio and pro-grade audio.

Designed for the TLM Body — Not a Generic Universal Clip

Third-party shockmounts ship in vague body-size ranges and rely on tension straps or universal clips to fit a span of microphones. The EA 4 is the opposite. It is sized to the 60 mm TLM body diameter — TLM 102, TLM 103, TLM 107, TLM 49, M 147 Tube, and M 149 Tube all drop into the cradle without modification, without spacers, and without compromise on grip. The microphone seats with the XLR connector pointing down through the bottom of the cradle, the swivel mount adjusts the angle, and the elastic suspension takes over the moment the stand is locked. Single-handed mic loading — twist open, place the mic, twist closed — keeps studio workflow fast.

Stand Compatibility with Any Standard Microphone Stand or Boom

The EA 4's built-in swivel mount carries a 5/8"-27 female thread — the US studio standard, supported by virtually every On-Stage, K&M, Atlas, Triad-Orbit, Rode, Latch Lake, and Yellowtec stand. Included in the box are two thread adapters: 3/8" (the European standard used by many K&M and import boom arms) and 1/2" (used on older studio booms and certain microphone stand brands). One shockmount covers every modern stand workflow without buying additional hardware. The swivel locks at any vertical angle for boom-arm vocal positioning, floor-stand instrument capture, or overhead drum miking.

Replacement Bands Mean the EA 4 Outlives the Studio Build-Out

Elastic bands wear. Neumann anticipated that on the first EA 4 design and continues to sell official Replacement Elastic Bands (EA 4) as a stock SKU — so when the original bands stretch or tear after years of session use, you replace the bands, not the entire shockmount. The cradle, swivel, and stand thread are over-engineered to outlast multiple band replacements. For working studios where the microphone gets used five days a week for a decade, this is the design choice that turns a $200 accessory into a permanent fixture.

Who the EA 4 Is For

If you bought a TLM 103, TLM 102, or TLM 107 with only the SG 2 swivel mount included, the EA 4 is your first-day upgrade — the difference is audible on the first take. If you are matching the matte-black TLM 103 mt or TLM 107 bk, the EA 4 bk finish keeps the rig visually consistent on the boom arm. If you are setting up a vocal booth, voiceover desk, or audiobook studio on a suspended floor, this is the shockmount that prevents the building from showing up in the recording. The EA 4 is sold separately because Neumann understands that some buyers (touring engineers, broadcast desks, fixed-install studios with isolation already engineered) don't need it — but for everyone else, this is the right shockmount.
