Larson Brothers built mandocello in exceptionally clean
condition and excellent playing order. Stahl
mandocellos are particularly popular with classical players for their great
playability and easy access to two full octaves on the 1st
string. 24 ½” scale length. Lower bout
is 14” across and about 3 3/8” deep. Neck
is laminated with enclosed tuners that work well. Canted spruce top. Maple back and side are stained a dark,
almost rosewood color. This example has
been refretted with a new intonated bridge and pro set up so it is ready to go. A few nicks and scratches but no cracks or other
repairs. The only issue is a number
(maybe part of someone’s social security number?) that has been lightly scratched
into the finish on the butt end of the instrument (see photo). This number could probably be removed by
applying a touch up layer of French polished shellac, but I haven’t tried to
mess with it. I obtained this mandocello
a few years back from Bob Hartman. Carl Larson’s grandson, and author of the “The
Larsons’ Creations Guitars and Mandolins”. Comes with a really nice custom made Cedar Creek
hardshell case.
The three Stahl instruments I have listed, mandocello, mandola and mandolin, would make a nice addition to a Larson collection. All three instruments are in excellent condition and playing order and I'm willing to offer a discount if someone is interested in the set.
