About This Listing

You are viewing probably one of the rarest Gretsch archtop guitars we have ever seen from the early 1940's.Based on extensive research, we believe this beautiful piece of history to be among the earlier Gretsch jazz guitars produced, as best as we can tell from the serial # probably  1941. It is a Model 100 Synchromatic jazz guitar. It has a  solid carved spruce top, flamed or curly maple backs and sides and deluxe inlays and gold hardware. This one has the stairstep bridge and deluxe tailpiece. It may have been a custom order ,we are not sure.  As you peruse the pics you'll discover that this guitar was barely played and other than some normal cosmetic issues caused from natural aging over the past approximate 80 years, this outstanding instrument has stood the test of time. The neck is straight and the guitar has lovely action and plays like a dream. From its tortoise shell binding, bound tortoise shell pickguard, abalone and pearl inlays in the fingerboard and on the headstock, flamed maple back, sides and neck, gold harp style tailpiece and hardware, you know for sure this was one of their top of the line instruments from that era. There are a few minor issues from aging: about a 6" split on the top below the tailpiece which appears to have been repaired at some time, a narrow 6" split on the back near the neck joint, average amount of lacquer checking on the natural finish, some deterioration of the pickguard binding, some minor wood shrinkage in a couple areas around the body binding. All in all, it is a solid instrument that reproduces the jazz sound of that era!  We want to thank Ed Bell from Reverb,a serious Gretsch collector & knowledgeable historian for helping us obtain more accurate information on this fine guitar.

Please look over the pictures for best view of the cosmetic condition. We obtained it from the family of the original owner who told us their relative (from the East coast at that time) purchased it before World War 2, and after he served only played it on occasion. Guitars of this quality and condition in our experience are hard to find. This is a top notch guitar for the serious player or collector looking for a rare vintage guitar in overall great condition! Includes a new Gator Hardshell case or we would substitute a wooded hard case if preferred.
