Up for auction is my 1987 Gibson Prehistoric Les Paul Reissue '59 Goldtop in a stunning & very rare nitrocellulose "Goldtop" finish. Serial Number: 7 01xx. These early pre-Custom Shop Historics are the finest and truest '59 Reissues ever built by Gibson. The big demand in the early 80's for true spec '59 Les Pauls gave Gibson the incentive to start building hand crafted & accurate prehistoric's in 1983. This special line of Les Paul Reissue continued in very limited numbers per year until the Custom Shop started there Historic Division in late 1993.
The Goldtop Reissue has just been setup by a professional guitar luthier. The neck has a medium '59 profile that is fast & comfortable and showing only minimal fret wear in the cowboy frets. The rosewood finger board is in excellent condition... it is dark and beautiful and has the look of aged Brazilian rosewood(?) The frets are factory original still with there capped ends. The neck is straight & true with a working truss rod and notes ring out clearly over the entire fretboard. The action is medium-low with a new set of DR Blues #10 pure nickel strings and intonation has been set using a strobe-tuner. The humbuckers are the 1980's Tim Shaw "Stamped Pat. Numbered" pickups with original wiring and solder joints. The pots, caps, wiring and solder joints are all original with date codes showing 1987. The Serial Number on the headstock starting with 7 = 1987 and 01xx = production number, being one of the early models made that year. The hardware is all original nickel showing some patina from age. The only non-original items are the Grover Tuners which were on the guitar at time of purchase... they are original 80's period correct Grovers and have aged accordingly. The headstock size & overlay detail, the neck profile, the carved maple top dimensions, the binding width, knobs, nickel hardware with the ABR-1 bridge, the one piece body & neck paired with the best vintage PAF humbuckers that have been made since the originals... is the Prehistoric Gibson Reissue '59.
These limited early Prehistoric Reissue '59 were normally dressed up with highly figured flame maple tops in various colors. This 1987 Reissue is the exception to the rule! I have never seen an early Prehistoric Reissue '59 Goldtop until I acquired this guitar. The nitro gold top is in stunning condition for its age... it does show a little nitro finish checking on the top but is to difficult for the camera to pick up. The nitro gold is '59 period correct in color... unlike the various shades of gold used on newer models today. The guitar weighs in at about 9 lbs. The sustain is truly unbelievable and must be heard... push the Tim Shaw pickups and they will deliver true vintage PAF tone with incredible breakup. There are no breaks or repairs on this soon to be 30-year old official vintage guitar. Just one small mark on the bass side lower bout (pic #5). The truss rod cover has a small chip and the jack plate has some chips and cracks. There is no buckle rash or any excessive wear on this guitar!
