The very first Hamer STD bass! This is it, "The Ultimate" Hamer collectible, second only to the first Hamer Standard #0000, owned by Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick. This irreplaceable, vintage Hamer, is the bass pictured on the very first Hamer catalog flyer, along with Rick's #0000 and Jethro Tull's Martin Barre's Standard #0002. This bass was mentioned on page 41 of "The Ultimate" An Illustrated History of Hamer Guitars. The book elaborated on the impact Peterson’s greenburst Explorer bass had.....
“The fourth Hamer instrument (#0003) was a four string Explorer bass with a flamed maple top finished in a rather bright, yet tasteful, greenburst finish, certainly a unique finish for the time. Hamer recalls that Tom Petersson had ordered a greenburst bass and told several people about it before it had even been built, so they had requests for a bass in that finish."
So, #0003 was built, in response to people seeing, or hearing about this bass, built for Tom.
If I had known the book was being assembled, I would have gladly contributed photos of the bass.
It was actually purchased by my brother, in 1978 or 79, from “Skip”, at 1st National Guitar (formerly “Ax In Hand Guitar) In Urbana, IL. Other than the tuners and the addition of a clear scratch guard, it is 100% original. The headstock has been professionally done and is 100% stable. The original pickups, bridge, tailpiece and pots, etc. are all 60’s vintage Gibson Thunderbird. Many of the earliest Hamer guitars used vintage Gibson pickups and hardware.
This bass sounds amazing. The neck is thin with fast action and a great vintage vibe. I have used it to record my last two Three Hour Tour albums.
This is the first time this bass has been offered for sale in over 40 years. Not only a significant part of Hamer guitar history, but also a part of the history of a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band, Cheap Trick. A truly unique and desirable piece of American Rock and Roll history. Includes the original Hamer flight case, complete with Tom's period rock band stickers, including an early and uber rare white Cheap Trick sticker. The real deal. The Prototype Hamer STD. Bass. Hamer guitars don't get any more vintage than this.
Partial, interesting trades considered. Vintage British or European sports cars? What have you got? Make an offer.
Principals only please. $34,995.
