I was laying in bed drifting off one night and an idea struck me, I got out of bed and started drawing. The next day I started in on making this idea.
A four string mandolin, with no air cavity.
In a way, this instrument was made to prove that the air inside of an instrument is not the principle that makes it “loud”. Use of the string energy efficiently is what makes instruments “loud”.
Think a bought it with me: if I drop a sheet of thin metal on the ground, it makes a terrific racket. It has no air column, no matched plates, no sustained energy of string vibration. It simply takes the energy you put into it (all be it a small amount) and vibrates to dispel it. The air around it is forced to vibrates and we hear it as sound. This instrument functions much like that plate. It is in essence a plate being forced to vibrate to the frequency of the string.
This instrument cuts through like a knife. It is surprising loud, I have played eight string mandolins with less volume.
It is made with:
-East Indian rose wood finger board
-One piece Mahogany neck through to the end block that holds the loop ends.
-The sound board is a sandwich of outer spruce layers and aerospace grade nomex between, glued together at radios.
No case included. I will package extremely well, in a big box.
