ENSONIQ SQ2 32 Voice 76-key workstation synthesizer. The SQ Series from the 1990s (not to be confused with the earlier ESQ-1 and SQ-80 which are a different architecture) were a less expensive addition to Ensoniq's line, and one of the best values available in a synth workstation in its day (and still today). Solidly built with an all-steel case, the SQ was available in 61-key (SQ1), 76-key (SQ2) and rack mount versions (SQR). The SQ series originally came as 21-voice units and then were all upgraded to 32-voice spec a few years after being introduced, at which time they also added a 76-key weighted action version called the KS-32. Ensoniqs were different form other synths, they had their own sound due to their use of proprietary in-house designed chips, and they were very versatile. The SQ line are no exception. Each came with 80 voices in Internal RAM, plus 20 Drum voices, and another 80 voices in ROM. All voices were highly editable, and the edited voices could be stored in internal or external RAM. Additional ROM voices were available on factory memory cards of which a dozen or so were issued, each with another 160 voices in two banks of 80 voices each. There were also external RAM cards available for storing edited or self-created voices. Both these RAM and ROM cards are still available on line (I recently sold out of the five I had in stock.) The SQs have an excellent and very easy to use 16-track sequencer, (not available on SQR) and on board effects derived from the legendary DP4. The SQ1 and SQ2 came with a quality Fatar semi-weighted synth action that features channel aftertouch and is smooth, quiet and satisfying to play. All-in-all a "do-it-all" synth at a very reasonable price.

This SQ2 was owned by a Nashville touring pro who was in the road bands of Travis Tritt and Burns & Poe. It was kept in a high quality professional grade hard shell case (which is being made ready to be listed and sold separately). It clearly was well cared for because it is in excellent cosmetic and functional condition, especially for a road veteran. (Trust me, I've encountered some real basket cases, but this one is in really nice shape.) The naturals are still nice and bright white (many of these models keys get quite yellow over time) and none are broken, loose or noisy. We've installed a new battery for the internal voice memory and a new display bezel (the original was cracked), and it's been given a thorough cleaning inside and out. All keys and tact switches are fully functional. It's ready for many more years of music making. Pedal assembly shown in picture is not included, but an AC cable will be provided.
