RARE!! 70s Tama Superstar 22,13,14,16 Re-ring Drum Kit with Wrap

Extremely Rare Early Tama Superstar Birch Drum Kit with Reinforcement Rings – Late 1970s

An extremely rare early Tama Superstar birch drum kit with reinforcement rings, dating from the late 1970s, featuring very unusual drum sizes.

What makes this kit even more unusual is that most examples came in lacquered finishes, whereas this one has a wrapped finish. I believe the originality of the wrap is supported by the decorative inlay strips in the bass drum hoops and its resemblance to the Midnight Blue finish featured in Tama catalogs, which was originally used on Imperialstar kits. This could mean it is a more unusual, possibly special-order example.

Sizes:

• 22×15” bass drum (!)
• 13×9” and 14×10” rack toms
• 16×16” floor tom

Additional features:

• All original internal mufflers are present
• Original tom holder and floor tom legs

Condition:

It is important to mention that this is not a mint or exceptionally well-preserved kit. There are no major structural issues, but the wrap has numerous scratches, dents and signs of wear. The hardware and bass drum hoops also show their age and previous use.

The tom holder is fully functional, although it has developed some wear over the years. Memory locks have been added to provide extra support and help it securely hold the larger toms.

The wrap has been trimmed slightly around the hoop openings because modern drumheads did not fit perfectly due to the original bearing edge design.

The bearing edges are in excellent condition almost everywhere, although there are one or two minor damaged spots, mainly next to the edges themselves. These have a very minimal effect, if any, on how the heads sit.

I have tried to describe the imperfections in as much detail as possible, but they should not put anyone off. For a drum kit approaching 50 years of age, this is a great-sounding instrument and a legendary, rare curiosity – one of the important models in Tama’s history.
