FREEDOM CUSTOM GUITAR RESEARCH C.S. Retro Series JB 5st -褐色(Kachi-Iro) w/Matching Head-【Made in Japan】

“Freedom Custom Guitar Research” is based in Arakawa Ward, Tokyo. Building on their exceptional repair expertise, the brand crafts instruments renowned for their outstanding sound, appearance, and playability, earning them immense popularity. Due to this high demand, the brand has temporarily suspended new orders and now has a backorder backlog of over two years.

The instrument featured here is a custom-order model from the “Retro Series”—a 5-string Jazz Bass. Based on a traditional style, this is a masterpiece that reveals the brand’s meticulous attention to detail throughout.

The body is crafted from alder, a classic wood renowned for its strong midrange projection. It features a maple neck paired with a rosewood fingerboard. The fingerboard radius is 280 mm, which is on the flatter side, ensuring smooth playability with minimal muting—even when playing primarily in the higher positions. One of the hallmarks of the Freedom series is its stainless steel frets; this model features a 20-fret “Warm” specification with reduced hardness. While toning down the metallic resonance characteristic of stainless steel frets, it offers durability and smooth playability, allowing you to focus on your playing without stress.

The bridge features an original design equipped with spiral saddles. By increasing the distance at the ball end of the B string, it balances the sound of each string while maintaining both tension and pitch accuracy.

Two original single-coil pickups are mounted. Combining the clarity and low-end characteristic of the traditional JB sound, they faithfully reproduce every subtle nuance of your picking. The three-knob control layout—two volume controls and a master tone—also follows a traditional style.

Among the 5-string jazz bass models sought after by many bassists today, this is a highly refined instrument that excels in the balance between each string. When played with two fingers, you can experience stable low end and midrange that really comes forward; when played with a pick, it offers excellent attack and a sound that’s both dynamic and well-rounded. When slapping, this particular instrument is characterized by a cohesive slap sound spanning from the low-mid to the high-mid range. Its subdued, calm midrange conveys a sense of versatility across all genres, and this instrument excels at maintaining a balance that doesn’t interfere with other parts, such as vocals, guitar, or drums.

The color scheme, named “Kachiiro” (Brownish), is described as “a deep indigo so dark it appears black”—a shade of navy blue with ancient roots in Japan. The matching headstock in navy blue—a color that represents Japan—complements the bass’s ability to produce low-end tones that support rather than overwhelm the music.

While the low-end sounds demanded of bassists vary across today’s diverse music scene, this instrument delivers what could be considered the “optimal solution” for every genre.

We encourage you to take this opportunity to consider it.
