Black Smoker Trad Master Series BETA-J5 -Sherwood Green Metallic / Medium Aged - 【Made in Japan】
“Black Smoker” is the original brand of “Black Cloud,” a guitar and bass workshop in Azumino City, Nagano Prefecture. Although the brand was launched in 2016, the instruments—crafted primarily by Senior Builder Mr. Kuroiwa and Master Builder Mr. Yanagisawa—are supported by top-tier players as “instruments ready for live performance the moment they’re taken out of the case.”
The instrument we’re featuring today is from the “Trad Master Series,” featuring an all-lacquer finish and an aging treatment. It is the 5-string model from the “Beta” bass lineup—a popular series that blends modern playability with a vintage aesthetic, developed in response to feedback from many musicians.
It utilizes classic materials: an alder body, a maple neck, and an Indian rosewood fingerboard. With a focus on vintage character and playability, it features a 34-inch scale length and 20 frets—a key difference from the “Standard Series.” The headstock design also departs from the standard five-in-a-row configuration on one side, instead adopting a 4-to-1 tuning peg arrangement. By positioning the pegs on the G-string side farther apart, the tension, resonance, and overall sound are tuned to a more vintage-inspired character.
Two original single-coil pickups are mounted. The passive configuration includes two volume controls and a master tone control; additionally, by pulling up the tone pot to connect the two pickups in series, you can produce a sound that emphasizes a thick, warm low end, similar to a Precision Bass.
This particular instrument strongly highlights the midrange presence characteristic of alder, while effectively toning down any harshness in the high frequencies. Although the sound isn’t flashy, it’s a bass that feels great to play, with low end that doesn’t interfere with other parts in a band ensemble. It delivers ample low end without sounding muddy, and thanks to its excellent pitch stability on the low B string, the phrasing comes through clearly.
Although it features the custom “Sherwood Green” finish, the instrument has developed a dark, “Charcoal Frost”-like hue over time. Paired with a tortoiseshell pickguard and a medium-aged finish, it exudes a sophisticated, mature look that’s truly stylish.
This is a popular model from a brand beloved by many players. We highly recommend this instrument to craft-minded bassists who want to be the backbone of their band.
Please take this opportunity to consider it.
