Fodera Emperor 5 Standard Special Black Limba
While Fodera's model naming conventions—such as phrasing and display order—seem to shift over time, the lineup is broadly categorized into "Custom" and "Standard" models.
To put it simply, "Custom" models offer limitless possibilities...
(Though, of course, there are things Vinnie simply won't do.)
In contrast, the "Standard" models feature fixed specifications, though they do undergo occasional minor updates.
Even with these Standards, if you request specific customizations, the model name gets a "Special" suffix.
(Please note that sometimes these special features might not be explicitly listed on the spec sheet.)
After that long preamble, let's talk about this Black Limba model.
While the wood is characterized by a bold, dark grain, the black coloration here is somewhat more restrained than what you typically see with Black Limba.
Instead, a lighter, whitish section is positioned in the center; this two-tone look creates a sophisticated vibe—almost creating the visual illusion of a neck-through construction.
True to that sophisticated aesthetic, the back is made of Alder, further enhancing the classy look.
The fingerboard, attached to a 3-piece maple neck, is Rosewood—adding yet another touch of understated elegance.
They say "brown things taste delicious," and this Emperor 5—perfect for the autumn season—has just arrived.
A quick look at the specs reveals Fodera/Duncan dual-coil pickups that can be switched between parallel mode and coil-tap mode; when coil-tapped, the active coil is positioned to emulate the sound of a '70s Jazz Bass.
The preamp is a collaboration with Trickfish, commonly known as the "V4."
It’s a 3-band EQ, but a great feature—even on the Standard model—is the internal mini-switch that allows you to toggle the frequency ranges.
It also includes a passive mode switch, so you don't have to worry about the battery dying.
These fixed specifications are characteristic of the "Standard" series.
When you play it, you get that classic Alder sound: powerful mids but with a slightly lighter touch—resulting in a natural, honest tone that isn't overly heavy or excessively bass-dominant. While it doesn't have an overly flashy character, I was particularly struck by the "viscosity" or "body" in the tone when using the dual-coil pickups.
It should prove highly appealing to players who prefer a sound with a bit of thickness—avoiding an overly bright or "cut-through-too-much" quality—whether playing fingerstyle or slap.
Even with the same basic design, one of the great things about the "Special" series is learning how the instrument's character shifts depending on the combination of top wood and fingerboard materials.
