―――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――
Sago is a Japanese guitar brand based in Amagasaki City, Hyogo Prefecture, that crafts each instrument with meticulous care.
Unbound by conventional specifications, its greatest appeal lies in the high degree of customization available through its made-to-order process—from wood selection to color, parts, and electronics—allowing for precise tailoring to the player’s preferences.
What truly defines Sago is its dedication to wood. Rather than limiting itself to standard musical instrument woods, the brand actively incorporates traditional Japanese woods such as chestnut and oak, exploring the full potential of the materials themselves.
The instrument we’ve just received is a custom 5-string bass that we ordered directly from the manufacturer.
This is a meticulously crafted instrument, with each piece of wood carefully selected on-site while we inspected the materials in person.
The standout feature is its wood configuration: a moon ebony fingerboard, a chestnut body, and an oak neck.
For this order, we began by selecting the fingerboard material and then determined the overall specifications based on that choice.
As we examined the wood in person, we chose moon ebony as the centerpiece of this bass.
From among the many options, we selected a piece with particularly beautiful grain patterns.
As its name suggests, Moon Ebony has a unique character that sets it apart from standard ebony.
In this particular piece, the color range—from deep brown to black—and the wood’s natural grain were incredibly eye-catching. Once we decided to use this fingerboard, we planned the overall wood configuration, including the body and neck, around it.
The contrast between the jet-black sections and the grain is exceptionally beautiful, and it pairs perfectly with the natural chestnut body.
This fingerboard exudes a sense of luxury with a touch of wildness, distinct from typical rosewood or maple. Personally, seeing the character of this fingerboard in person and wanting to use it was what prompted me to order this guitar.
For this reason, to highlight the presence of this fingerboard, I deliberately chose distinctive Japanese woods for the body and neck as well.
I chose chestnut for the body. While chestnut features a distinct grain pattern, it also has a rustic, warm character that sets it apart from woods like ash. For this particular instrument, I gave it a natural finish so that the chestnut’s natural grain can be fully appreciated.
What makes this bass even more distinctive is the oak neck.
Oak is an extremely hard wood and is trusted for its strength when used as neck material.
Since the neck of a 5-string bass bears the brunt of the string tension, the choice of neck wood is a critical factor for the instrument—not just for the sound. The combination of a chestnut body, an oak neck, and a moon ebony fingerboard, as seen here, is a choice that is truly unique to Sago.
▼ STAFF COMMENT ▼
After actually playing it, I really like the natural resonance—it has a solid core while still allowing you to feel the texture of the wood. In particular, the tone retains its definition even down to the Low-B, and there’s a solid foundation in the low end.
What I personally found interesting was that the sound wasn’t as hard as I’d expected based on the wood combination.
Since it features an oak neck paired with a moon ebony fingerboard, I imagined a fairly hard, crisp sound before playing it. However, when I actually played it, I didn’t perceive that much harshness; it has just the right amount of attack while producing a natural, pleasant tone. Perhaps the natural, warm resonance of the chestnut body adds a well-balanced element—I was very impressed that, even though the core and attack are solid, the sound never becomes too stiff or harsh.
I think what makes this particular instrument so interesting is that it retains a natural resonance and just the right amount of warmth.
What stood out most was how satisfying it felt to play chords. While the definition when playing single notes is excellent, I especially loved how well the chords came together. If you play chords frequently or want to produce clean, full-sounding chords that include the low end, I highly recommend giving this a try.
This custom-order instrument features a combination of woods rarely seen in standard basses.
Even just looking at the specs is quite intriguing, but when you actually hold it in your hands, you’ll find it’s a fascinating instrument where the unique characteristics of each wood come together seamlessly as a single instrument.
This instrument embodies Sago’s signature dedication to materials in every aspect—its appearance, wood composition, and sound.
Please be sure to pick one up and experience the feel created by the combination of chestnut, oak, and Moon Ebony.
