Based in Amagasaki City, Hyogo Prefecture, Sago is a Japanese guitar brand that crafts each instrument with meticulous care.

What truly defines Sago is its dedication to wood. Rather than limiting itself to standard musical instrument woods, the brand actively incorporates traditional Japanese woods such as chestnut and oak, exploring the full potential of the materials themselves.

The instrument we’ve just received is a custom 5-string bass that we ordered directly from the manufacturer.

It’s a meticulously crafted instrument for which we carefully selected each piece of wood on-site while inspecting the materials firsthand.

For this order, we began by selecting the fingerboard wood and used that as the basis for determining the overall specifications.

While selecting the wood on-site, this Purpleheart caught our eye.

After personally verifying the beautiful color of this wood among the many options available, we selected this Purpleheart.

The deep purple unique to Purpleheart is exceptionally beautiful, and we immediately envisioned how it would look paired with the White Pearl body. With the decision to use this wood already made, we built the overall specifications around it.

We chose alder for the body and Dress White for the finish. Rather than a stark, pure white, the finish features an elegant white hue enhanced by the shimmer of pearl.

Combined with a tortoiseshell-patterned pickguard and gold hardware, the result is a look that’s glamorous without being overly flashy—a very cohesive and well-balanced design.

Alder is a very familiar wood for basses; I find its appeal lies in its well-balanced response from the low to mid-range frequencies and its natural tone that doesn’t lean too heavily toward any specific frequency band. With this 5-string model as well, I get the impression that the foundation of the sound is that characteristic alder tone—easy to play and well-rounded. By adding Purpleheart, which has high density and produces a solid attack, the combination maintains the low-end stability you want in a 5-string bass while still allowing the contours of the sound to come through clearly.

When I actually played it, I could feel the solid low-end resonance typical of a 5-string, and I felt it created an exquisite overall balance. The string tension isn’t too tight, nor does it feel too loose. Personally, I really like how the high-mid range comes through. If anything, I get the impression that the high-mids come through a bit more clearly than the lows. With a solid, full-bodied low end and well-defined upper-midrange, I highly recommend this bass to anyone who wants their sound to cut through in a band setting.

Personally, I also recommend playing with the tone knob slightly rolled back. While the sound with the tone fully open is certainly great, the upper-midrange already has a strong presence, so even with the tone rolled back, the sound doesn’t feel like it’s receding into the background. I find this approach—adding body while maintaining clarity—particularly easy to work with.

Both in appearance and sound, this is a custom-ordered instrument designed with live performance in mind.

For this order, I selected the wood not only for its inherent properties but also because I was drawn to its color and character when I saw it in person.

The result is a look that’s quite striking and commanding, while still retaining the classic vibe of a 5-string bass.

When you actually play it, it’s pleasantly different from the flashiness you might expect based on its appearance—the overall balance of the 5-string, the moderate string tension, and the clear projection in the high-mid range are truly addictive.

This is an instrument that can change its character depending on the player’s touch and setup. Please be sure to pick up and try this one-of-a-kind Sago instrument, crafted with meticulous attention to detail starting from the wood selection.
