The JHS Mary-K 1969 Japan Fuzz is a vintage-inspired fuzz pedal based on the rare 1960s Kay Fuzz Tone, originally manufactured in Japan. That circuit was designed as a more affordable relative of the Shin-Ei/Univox Super-Fuzz and became known for its thick, unusual, frequency-focused fuzz sound. U2 guitarist The Edge is one of its best-known users.
JHS Pedals+1
The Mary-K is particularly interesting because it combines that unusual vintage fuzz voice with modern controls and an expression pedal input.
What does it sound like?
- Thick, saturated fuzz: Full-bodied distortion with a dense, harmonically rich texture.
- Wah-like frequency sweeps: Moving the frequency control changes which parts of the sound stand out, creating a nasal, vocal quality.
- Cutting lead tones: Emphasizes particular frequencies to help guitar lines stand out in a mix.
- Psychedelic and alternative rock: Great for unusual textures, gritty riffs and expressive single-note parts.
- More aggressive fuzz: Engaging JHS Mode adds more fuzz and a stronger midrange presence.
