Dramatically downsizing to help fund farm operations. Listing more than 40 pieces in the coming days. Please check my other listings.

For engineers who know vintage compression, the Sta-Level needs very little introduction. For everyone else, this unit represents one of the most celebrated dynamic control designs in recording history. The design originates with the 1956 Gates Sta-Level broadcast limiter. While radio stations originally relied on it for smooth, unattended broadcast transmission, studio engineers quickly discovered that its unique variable-mu gain reduction circuit was peerless on bass and lead vocals. It provides massive, musical compression without clamping down unnaturally or stripping the life from a performance. Retro Instruments meticulously resurrected that classic mid-century topology, modernizing the power supply, noise floor, and recovery controls to meet modern recording workflows. If you are looking for that thick, effortless analog weight that anchors a track squarely in the center of a mix, this is the gold standard of tube leveling amplifiers.

This is one of the rare items in my sale where I do not have the original factory box. That said, please check my seller feedback both here and on a popular auction site (jmarsh45). I take packing very seriously. This heavy tube unit will be thoroughly bubble-wrapped and cushioned inside a sturdy primary box, which will then be packed inside a second heavy-duty outer box with ample padding to guarantee it arrives safely at your door. I am also happy to remove and pack the tubes separately, if desired.

Specifications:

  • Circuit Topology: Authentic valve-driven variable-mu design based directly on the 1956 Gates Sta-Level architecture
  • Transformer Balancing: Custom high-grade input and output transformers providing substantial low-end weight and harmonic character
  • Dynamic Control: Continuous Input and Output gain controls paired with switchable Recovery modes for flexible time constants
  • Meter Functionality: Large vintage-style analog VU meter for accurate gain reduction monitoring
  • Chassis Format: 3U standard 19-inch rackmount

Let me know if you have any questions. As I mentioned above doing serious liquidation to help support the horse sanctuary so will be listing a lot in the upcoming days.

re: RETURNS

I have noticed in recent years here and on other sites there seems to be an increase of buyers that purchase an item, practically invent some sort of problem or issue, and then hold the seller's feedback ransom in order to get a few bucks back for free. That is why I am making it perfectly clear in my listings that I do not accept returns. Please ask all questions up front (additional condition details, request more pictures, etc.). However, if you check my feedback both here and on a popular auction site ( jmarsh45 ) you will see that I have a perfect 100% feedback rating of over 1,500 across both platforms over the past 20+ years. I take my feedback and my gear very seriously even though I am a hobbyist. So please know that if there is a genuine problem, I am sure we can work something out. Just reach out before or after with any questions or issues.
