The Mooer Ocean Machine is a compact ambient/delay/reverb pedal designed in collaboration with guitarist and producer Devin Townsend. It’s essentially a multi-effects “ambient soundscape” box, aimed at creating the huge, layered textures associated with Townsend’s work.

What it does

The pedal has three main effects sections:

• Delay 1 — a delay with its own controls for creating rhythmic or spacious repeats.
• Delay 2 — a second, independently adjustable delay. This lets you stack two different delay times/repeat patterns.
• Reverb — a large, atmospheric reverb designed for everything from subtle ambience to enormous washes.

The two delays can be run together with the reverb, so you can create sounds ranging from conventional lead delay to extremely dense, evolving ambient textures.

The interesting part: “Ocean Machine” approach

Rather than being simply a delay/reverb pedal, it is designed around layering. For example, you could have:

short-ish delay → longer delay → huge reverb

That produces a complex cloud of repeats where the original note gradually disappears into the reverb. This is particularly useful for clean passages, sustained chords, intros, leads, post-rock/metal ambience, and cinematic textures.

It also has presets, allowing you to save and recall sounds rather than rebuilding them manually.

Devin Townsend connection

Townsend collaborated with Mooer on the pedal, drawing on the enormous, processed guitar sounds associated with his recordings and live rigs. The name references his Ocean Machine project/album, though the pedal isn't simply a recreation of a specific studio effect from that record.

One important distinction: it's not primarily a distortion/amp-simulation pedal. Its strength is what happens after your guitar sound—delays, spatial effects, and massive ambience.
