Here is a rarity from the 1950s: an Imperial Drums Gala drum set with a black foil finish, made in Switzerland.

Oscar Bauer began manufacturing drum kits for the Swiss market in Zurich in 1941. Around 1950, the well-known Imperial Gala range was introduced.

Imperial Drums were played by renowned drummers such as Paul ‘Polly’ Guggisberg (‘Original Teddies’ – Teddy Stauffer’s big band) and Charly Antolini.

The metric shells were made from multi-ply plywood and fitted with reinforcement rings. The grooves are in good condition, ensuring the heads sit properly. The natural skin heads are definitely still playable. The tension screws on the resonant side of the floor tom are a little stiff. The set shows signs of wear consistent with its age, but is otherwise in decent condition. An original 1950s Sonor tom hanger was fitted at the factory.
