―――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――

As one of Japan’s world-renowned high-end brands, Sugi is supported by many players both in Japan and abroad.

The instruments, which embody CEO Makoto Sugimoto’s long-standing relationships with artists and his expertise in instrument craftsmanship, excel not only in sound but also in playability—a key feature of the brand.

The body is crafted from alder, offering a rich midrange and well-balanced response, resulting in an easy-to-play, musical sound. The body top features Eastern curly maple with exceptionally beautiful grain.

Eastern curly maple, with its distinctive, undulating curly grain, is a beautiful wood whose appearance changes depending on how the light hits it. Combined with the deep “Blue Grotto” color, the three-dimensional quality of the grain stands out, creating a stunningly glamorous finish that reveals different expressions depending on the viewing angle.

Furthermore, the fingerboard is crafted from bird’s-eye maple. In addition to the bright, clear texture characteristic of maple, the fine grain unique to bird’s-eye maple is visible across the entire surface, creating a fingerboard with a strong presence. Paired with the Eastern curly maple on the body top, this luxurious wood combination allows you to enjoy the distinct character of different maple varieties within a single instrument.

The pickups feature Sugi’s original mini humbuckers. Many people likely associate humbucker pickups—which have traditionally been used on electric basses—with a sound that delivers high output from the low end through the mids but fails to capture the highs and presence, resulting in a muffled, difficult-to-handle tone. However, these mini humbucker pickups feature coil-tap switching, allowing them to produce everything from a refined, sparkling JB-style single-coil sound to a rich, lustrous humbucker tone. Not only does it support SS and HH configurations, but since each pickup can be switched via coil tap, it makes it easy to control clarity and low-end response in SH and HS configurations as well. This gives it the potential to become a new standard pickup that isn’t limited by playing style or genre.

Sonically, the tone is captivating, balancing richness and clarity by combining the rich midrange of alder with the crisp attack and excellent response characteristic of maple-based woods. Furthermore, the HH layout accommodates a wide range of tones, from the thick, rich sound of the front pickup to the tight, clear sound of the rear pickup.

This guitar not only boasts a luxurious appearance thanks to its beautiful wood grain but also represents a thorough pursuit of both playability and sonic perfection through Sugi’s signature meticulous craftsmanship and careful wood selection.

Combining the musical midrange of alder, the vibrant body top made of Eastern Curly Maple, the beautiful grain of the birdseye maple fingerboard, and the wide range of sound-shaping possibilities offered by the HH pickup configuration, this model embodies Sugi’s distinctive character and high level of craftsmanship.

Please take this opportunity to try out this top-of-the-line instrument, packed with all the best qualities Sugi has to offer.
