The Dingwall Z3 (passive model) has arrived.

This instrument is part of the Z Series, a line within the brand that is rarely available in Japan.

The body features a swamp ash back and a stunning back-eye birch top.

Despite its lightweight, unique shape, it is meticulously designed for excellent weight balance, delivering superb playability whether standing or seated.

The most distinctive feature of the Z Series is, of course, the two-piece ash body and how it’s constructed.

This structure, known as “Dual Density,” involves using different densities of ash wood on the low-string and high-string sides.

By combining high-density ash—which produces a tighter tone—on the low-string side with low-density ash—which intentionally produces a more open tone—on the high-string side, the guitar achieves an even better sound balance.

While simple differences in volume can be compensated for by balancing the pickup output, controlling the natural resonance of the wood inherent to each individual instrument through this structure stabilizes the positioning of each string.

The neck is made of wenge, and the fingerboard is made of ziricote.

The inlays are made of phosphorescent material, allowing for worry-free use even in the dark—and it’s a nice touch that the manufacturer’s original inlays are highlighted.

The guitar is equipped with the brand’s original FDV pickups.

Although hidden by the pickup covers, they are actually reverse P-type split-coil pickups.

Using reverse-type split-coils allows you to feel a more expansive sustain on the low strings, while the high strings sound fuller, resulting in a clean, refined tone befitting a high-end instrument.

Unusually for this model, it’s a passive guitar, featuring a simple configuration of 1 Volume, Pickup Selector, and Tone controls.

The pickup selector has four positions: from the neck side, they are Front, Front/Rear, Middle/Rear, and Rear. These controls will be familiar to Dingwall users.

While the term “passive” might give the impression of a subdued sound—unlike typical Dingwall character—that perception will likely vanish once you actually play it.

It retains the classic Dingwall character while feeling incredibly easy to play.

Thanks to the passive circuit’s characteristic ability to handle effects well and its wide dynamic range, you can expect it to excel across an even broader range of genres.

Even if you ever get tired of the passive setup, the cavity has been cut out generously, so converting it to active later on is relatively easy.

You can use it as a simple passive amp as-is, or install your favorite preamp—you’re given a wide range of options.

Personally, to be honest, I’d prefer to keep it as a passive amp.

That’s how much I’m drawn to this passive Z3 model.

Upon close inspection, the exterior shows only minor dents and small scratches. It still retains its beauty, looking almost brand-new.

The neck is in excellent condition. There are currently no noticeable warping or buckling issues—it’s in great shape. As you’d expect from Dingwall.

There’s still plenty of adjustment left in the truss rod, and the fundfret—which tends to wear down easily—still has about 70% of its material remaining.

There are currently no issues with the electronics, making this a instrument that can still hold its own on the front lines.

The Z Series is extremely rare on the Japanese market.

It’s perfect for bassists who want to tackle a variety of genres with a Dingwall.
