Up for sale is a hard-to-find vintage Gibson case for an early 1960s (‘61-‘63) "Les Paul era" Gibson SG Standard, Special, Custom, or EB0. Finding a clean early pebble-grain case is rare enough, but finding one partial case candy is awesome. And this is it. I would consider this one a true "investment-grade" accessory for your original vintage Gibson.
The Case itself:
This is an authentic, original early '60s black "pebble grain" hardshell case. Unlike later mid-to-late '60s Gibson cases that feature a cotton-fleece marigold interior that tends to fray and pill up, this highly desirable example features the ultra-premium bright yellow-gold smooth silk-blend plush velvet lining used exclusively from late 1960 into mid-1963.
- Condition & Alignment: The case lines up GREAT with zero structural warping, lid overlap, or lip deformation, a major rarity for these thin-walled early cases. The edges are clean and structurally sound. The interior is super bright and only shows minimal staining, pretty much right where the bottom strap button rests (see photos). The exterior has light scuffing and some fading. She’s not completely jet black anymore, but the condition and presentation is truly is impressive compared to most of these you see. Gibson badge still intact near the handle!
- Hardware: The original leather handle is fully intact, clean, and structurally secure. All factory latches are present, original, and function smoothly. They’re even still pretty shiny.
- Scent: There are no strong mold or heavy smoke odors. While it has been carefully aired out, it does posses a faint, "vintage" scent expected of a 60-year-old case. (Like your old long box of bronze aged comics.)
- Provenance & Interior Impressions: This case originally housed an early short-scale Gibson EB-0 bass from the factory. The interior plush lining on the lid still shows impressions from the original EB-0 hardware layout. Because early 1961–1963 SG guitars and short-scale EB-0 basses shared the exact same physical body shape, an early (‘61-63) SG guitar fits this case. At least most should; can’t guarantee a perfect fit if your vintage SG has a weird neck angle or replacement tuners, etc. And please not that newer SGs will not fit properly - this is for a he earliest “Les G” iteration of the Les Paul/SG model.
The Case Candy (Included):
- Original factory case key: Fully functional and correct for the period.
- Original key envelope: The factory paper envelope the key came in, completely intact with minimal wear.
- Original Gibson "Mr. Dealer" card: This factory-issued hangtag/instruction card was placed in the case at the factory to instruct store owners on initial display and setup. It is still crisp, fully legible, and structurally sound with light smudges on the back and a few wavy wrinkles. But no hard creases.
If you own an investment-grade 1961, 1962, or 1963 Gibson Les Paul/SG or EB0 bass, this is what you want to make your guitar more factory-complete and maximize its total appraisal value. Or just add a clean example to your gear collection!
I’m selling the case AS-IS, simply because I cannot guarantee your SG will fit, but if you know you know - if your guitar is a true vintage, ‘61-‘63 with the first iteration heel design, you should be aces. If you have any questions let me know.
