Rare Vintage Ludwig Stainless-Steel Concert-Tom Collection — 8-Piece Configuration
Offered here is a distinctive vintage Ludwig stainless-steel concert-tom collection consisting of eight drums, including a 24" bass drum, six concert toms, and an 18" floor tom. This is an unusual configuration and an opportunity for the Ludwig collector, vintage drummer, studio owner, or musician looking for something genuinely different from the typical vintage Ludwig kit.
The collection includes:
- 24" Ludwig bass drum
- 6" Ludwig concert tom
- 8" Ludwig concert tom
- 13" Ludwig concert tom
- 14" Ludwig concert tom
- 15" Ludwig concert tom
- 16" Ludwig concert tom
- 18" Ludwig floor tom
The drums feature stainless-steel shells and Blue & Olive Ludwig badges, giving the set the unmistakable appearance and character of Ludwig's stainless-steel era of the late 1970s.
SERIAL NUMBERS
The serial numbers have been individually recorded and are included here for the benefit of collectors and prospective buyers:
24" Bass Drum — 2221299
6" Concert Tom — 1628751
8" Concert Tom — 1725596
13" Concert Tom — 2221278
14" Concert Tom — 2221285
15" Concert Tom — 2221267
16" Concert Tom — 2221596
18" Floor Tom — 2221297
An interesting aspect of this collection is the serial-number pattern. The 24" bass drum and the 13", 14", 15", 16" and 18" drums carry closely grouped serial numbers, consistent with a common production period. The 6" and 8" drums carry substantially earlier serial numbers.
Based on the ownership history, the 6" and 8" drums are believed to have been added shortly after the original purchase of the primary configuration. This is presented as ownership history/inference rather than a claim of factory documentation.
IMPORTANT MOUNTING / MODIFICATION DISCLOSURE
The 6" and 8" concert toms have modified/replaced attachment brackets. Their current mounting arrangement is not being represented as original Ludwig hardware.
The 6" and 8" drums are currently mounted together on a flat-base stand with no apparent manufacturer identification. The stand does not appear to be Ludwig-branded.
The Ludwig identity of the 6" and 8" drum shells themselves is documented by their Ludwig badges and serial numbers. The modification disclosure applies specifically to their current mounting brackets and stand.
The rest of the collection should likewise be considered vintage equipment and should be evaluated carefully from the photographs.
CONDITION
Overall, this is a very presentable vintage collection. The polished stainless-steel shells photograph exceptionally well and have the distinctive look that makes these drums stand out from conventional vintage Ludwig kits.
As expected with vintage equipment of this age, there are scratches, scuffs, cosmetic marks and other signs of age and use. Because stainless steel is highly reflective, some marks visible in photographs may also be reflections rather than damage.
Please examine all photographs carefully. I have intentionally included multiple views so that prospective buyers can see the drums, shells, badges, hardware and overall configuration.
The drums currently wear Remo heads, as shown in the photographs. These should be considered replacement/current-use heads unless otherwise documented.
The buyer should expect normal vintage wear and should not expect a cosmetically perfect, museum-condition collection.
WHAT MAKES THIS COLLECTION UNUSUAL
The appeal of this collection is the combination of the stainless-steel construction, large 24" bass drum, 18" floor tom, six concert toms, and documented serial numbers.
The configuration provides an unusually broad range of tom sizes:
6" • 8" • 13" • 14" • 15" • 16" • 18"
combined with a 24" bass drum.
The closely grouped serial numbers among the principal larger drums make the collection particularly interesting from a vintage Ludwig standpoint, while the earlier-production 6" and 8" drums add another layer to the history of the set.
This should not be interpreted as a claim that all eight drums were a single factory-matched set produced on the same date. Rather, this is being offered accurately as an eight-drum vintage Ludwig stainless-steel concert-tom collection/configuration, with the serial-number history documented above.
VINTAGE LUDWIG STAINLESS-STEEL ERA
Ludwig introduced its stainless-steel drums during the 1970s, and the stainless-steel line is now recognized as one of the more distinctive chapters in Ludwig's history. These drums have a very different visual character from Ludwig's more familiar chrome-over-metal and wrapped-shell instruments.
The exact production year of every drum is not being overstated here because vintage Ludwig serial-number dating from this period is not precise enough to warrant assigning an exact year to the entire collection solely from the serial numbers.
The serial numbers are provided primarily to document the individual drums and establish their relative production sequence.
INCLUDED WITH THE SALE
The sale includes the eight drums shown in this listing, along with the mounting hardware/stands specifically shown in the photographs.
Please do not assume that a piece of hardware is included simply because it appears in a photograph unless it is part of the drum's mounting arrangement or specifically identified as included.
The flat-base stand supporting the 6" and 8" toms is included, but its manufacturer has not been identified and it is not being represented as original Ludwig equipment.
If there is any question about a particular piece of hardware, please ask before purchasing.
FOR THE COLLECTOR
I have taken particular care to photograph and document the individual drums and serial numbers because this is not a generic used drum set. The intention is to give the next owner enough information to understand exactly what is being offered.
The individual serial numbers have been retained as part of the seller's documentation, and additional close-up photographs of badges, serial numbers, mounting hardware or other details can be provided to a serious prospective buyer upon request.
This collection is being offered complete rather than parted out.
If you are a serious Ludwig collector or vintage drummer and have questions about the configuration, serial numbers, mounting hardware, condition, or history, please feel free to reach out. I would much rather provide additional photographs or information before the sale than have a buyer make assumptions about a vintage instrument.
Please review all photographs carefully. This is vintage equipment with age-related wear and some documented modifications to the mounting arrangement of the 6" and 8" toms. The buyer will receive the drums and included hardware in the condition and configuration represented in this listing.
