Named after the popular Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas, the Collings Winfield is a modified version of the Collings Standard Dreadnought, featuring specifications frequently requested by flatpicking specialists. The combination of a top and bracing (bracing) made of Adirondack spruce, along with an enlarged soundhole—supported by a top bracing pattern based on the earliest 14-fret dreadnoughts—makes the CW a true powerhouse for bluegrass.
Every detail of this model is designed to provide ample headroom and projection for an aggressive playing style, without sacrificing the characteristic Collings sound. Distinctive visual features, such as the “Dalmatian” pickguard and the absence of fingerboard inlays, also make it instantly recognizable.
CW Mahogany A vs. CW Indian A
Although both models have the same body dimensions, the key differences are listed below:
The CW Mahogany A features a Honduran mahogany back and sides, “tortoise”-style Binding on the body and fingerboard, and a walnut decorative strip on the back.
The CW Indian A features a back and sides made of East Indian rosewood, “Grained Ivoroid” Binding on the body and fingerboard, a “Herringbone” pattern edge strip on the top, and a “Zipper” design decorative strip on the back.
The guitar manufacturer Collings was founded in 1973 by Bill Collings in Austin Texas. What began with individual instruments, which were only built to order, quickly developed into a well-known name in the music scene. Western guitars from Collings are characterized by their dynamics, an extremely open sound and great workmanship.
