Vintage electric guitars command sky-high prices as baby boomers become collectors

True love knows no fear, and legendary blues guitarist B.B. King once rushed into a burning building to save his beloved Lucille. But Lucille wasn’t his wife – it was actually his Gibson 335 electric guitar. The incident is emblematic of the respect that most musicians show their instruments. That love has translated into a burgeoning guitar collector’s market over the last 30 years, with some instruments that originally sold for US$200 or less back in the 1950s selling for upwards of US$200,000 today. Jimmy Chamberlin Is Selling His Old Smashing Pumpkins Stuff

Jimmy Chamberlin, original drummer for the Smashing Pumpkins, launched an official shop selling off a bunch of his old equipment from his days in the band. The shop features more than 200 pieces of gear that Chamberlin used on tour and in the studio, including drum kits, snare drums, tambourines, cowbells, and more. “Over twenty years, you just accumulate so much stuff, and you can’t play it all. After spending a few years working in recording studios, Kalt, who has a master’s degree in computer science, created ClientBase, the first customer relationship management (CRM) software for travel agents and group tour operators. After selling that company, he created a highly successful online options trading site, optionsXpress, which he took public in 2005 and later sold to Charles Schwab.
