Introduction
This all tube
amplifier is based on the normal channel of a Pro Reverb Blackface
Amplifier.
The idea behind making this amp in this size was to make it very portable
while giving the player a superb clean tone as well as a tone platform for the
stomp box pedal users.
The portability, tone shaping capability and moderate power of this very
compact amp make it a limitless choice for serious guitarist.
Hammer 35 (Standard) in depth
At the heart of this
compact amp is a four tube amp which is the normal channel of a Blackface
Pro Reverb. The input is the high sensitivity input. The tone controls are
passive and interactive.
As we know Pro Reverb does not have a presence knob, but Hammer 35 has a
Presence knob which works in the preamp section and helps to have better
tone shaping possibilities. The amp is very flexible in terms of its tonal
character. To match this tonal character to your needs, you have the option of
selecting the tube for the preamp, phase inverter and the power section.
Each tube affects the tone accordingly. Of course you can buy the amp with
stock choice of tubes and the amp is still superb.
The preamp section choice of tubes:
12AY7: this tube has the lowest
gain among others. That is perfect for warm clean tones. With this tube the amp
stay clean for most part of volume range.
5771: This tube has less gain
than ECC83 / 12AX7, but it is hotter than 12AY7. The best tube choice to reduce
the gain in the preamp.
12AX7 / ECC83: There are
so many variants of this tube out there. They all work in this stage very well.
This tube has the most gain among others. If you like how this amp roars
when it is cranked, use this tube in the preamp and the phase inverter section.
. And still you can play with reasonable sound volume. That is with this amp
you don't have to play at full loudness to create that sound. For the sake
of tone authenticity, Jupiter Capacitors which are a true remake of the
Yellow Astron Capacitors have been used.
Phase Inverter
choice of tubes:
12AT7/ ECC81: This is the
standard choice of most blackface amps. These tubes have less gain/ more
headroom than 12AX7's. Using this tube results in a amp with more headroom /
clean.
12AX7 / ECC83: using this
tube beefs up the amp more. If you want to crank this amp and get more crunch
and compression, this is the right choice for you.
Power amp choice of tubes:
6L6GC: This is the tube choice
for those who need a cleaner sound and more headroom in the poweramp section.
5881: This tube has less power than 6L6GC and could be used in
place of 6L6GC when less power/ headroom is desired.
