The Electro Harmonix Dirt Road Special is a reissue of the EHX amplifier of the same name from the 1970s and features a straightforward solid-state design with 40 watts of power. For this reissue, Electro Harmonix has revised both the electronics and the mechanical design to improve the amp’s reliability for modern requirements. A built-in 12-inch speaker makes the Dirt Road Special a compact, all-in-one solution for rehearsal rooms, small stages or simply for practising in your own living room. This little power cube is therefore not just a mere practice amp – what’s more, the combo can serve as a powerful platform for wild experimentation, especially when used in combination with external effects pedals!

In terms of tone, the Dirt Road Special covers both clean sounds and overdrive. Alongside the volume control, there is a ‘Bite’ control which works in tandem with the volume setting and influences the crunch or overdrive character. An additional ‘Tone’ control handles the basic tone shaping. This ensures that the controls remain deliberately straightforward, in keeping with the simple design of the original Dirt Road Special.

A significant enhancement over the historic 1970s original is the integrated reverb section, whose algorithms are derived from the Electro Harmonix Holy Grail Max. You can choose between Spring, Plate, Hall and Reverse, whilst the reverb time can be adjusted using the Time control and the effect level using the Reverb control. Furthermore, the reverb can be switched on and off using the included footswitch.
