The 'Maxon OD-808' and 'Maxon OD-9' are masterpieces of overdrive pedals that made the name of Nisshin Onpa Seisakusho known to the world. Needless to say, they are highly regarded worldwide, along with the Ibanez export models 'TS-808' and 'TS-9' that were produced as OEM products for them.

This overdrive pedal was produced by Maxon (Nisshin Onpa Seisakusho) from around 1979 to 1981. It was sold as the "Ibanez TS-808 Tube Screamer Overdrive Pro" for overseas export and as the "Maxon OD-808 Overdrive" for domestic distribution, as is well known to guitar and pedal enthusiasts. Due to its rarity and use by popular artists, it enjoys high popularity in the vintage market, and as evidenced by the existence of reissue models, clone models, collectors, and researchers, it reigns as one of the greatest compact effect pedals.

This latest arrival is a large-case OD-808, shipped around 1980. The casing shows signs of use, such as scratches and paint peeling, giving it a nice, vintage feel.

This pedal features the RC4558P op-amp IC, also known as the Malaysian chip. The original sound and the drive blend naturally, resulting in a moderately compressed, sticky drive with a slightly wide range and a clear, edgy sound image. The low frequencies are moderately refined, while a slightly rough harmonic quality is added to the mid-high frequencies, giving single notes a crisp, well-defined presence. It's perfect for pushing amplifiers in the so-called "808 style" that supported the rock/blues scene around 1980, and it will also fully showcase its characteristics when paired with vintage amplifiers of that era. A superb vintage overdrive that evokes the guitar sounds of that era flowing from classic albums. Please give it a try.
