Steve Vai's Childhood Home Practice Rig Lands on Reverb

When you hear that Steve Vai's "childhood home" practice rig is available for sale, you might imagine some old budget guitar he grew up playing at his parent's house. But that's not what Reverb seller All Music Inc's Musicdungeon has in store.

A wonderfully ornate Ibanez JEM 7-string, a top-of-the-line combo amp, and a small effects chain—this is the rig that the guitar legend would use to practice for East Coast gigs and tours, and it's for sale on Reverb now.

Good son that he is, Steve would spend some time at his parent's house in Long Island ahead of shows, gearing up and running scales on this setup in his childhood home.

"Not too long ago, I visited my childhood home on Long Island," Steve says, "and I realized that, through the years, I would leave gear there that I would use when I was in Long Island for all sorts of different things."

From 2000 on, this JEM7V-WH, Carvin Legacy II, Boss DS-1, Boss DD-5, and Dunlop CryBaby 95Q played a pivotal role in that preparation.

The WH in JEM7V-WH stands for white, though it might as well stand for "workhorse," as Steve describes it. "I put a lot of hours on it when I was in New York," he says.

In addition to the practice rig from his childhood home, Steve is also parting with a scalloped-fretboard Fender Stratocaster signed by all of the guitarists of the supergroup Generation Axe, including Tosin Abasi, Nuno Bettencourt, Zakk Wylde, Yngwie Malmsteen, and Steve himself.
