A rare and exceptionally well-preserved Sonor Signature Heavy Beech kit from the 1980s, finished in the original Signal Red (RAL 3001) colour.

This kit underwent a complete restoration in our workshop two years ago. It was stripped down to the individual components, with every piece of hardware cleaned, polished, lubricated and inspected before being correctly reassembled onto the professionally refinished shells.

The restoration was carried out with particular emphasis on originality. All hardware and fittings are original Sonor parts, including the small components that are often missing or replaced on Signature kits today.

The result is a Signature kit that presents remarkably close to new.

Heavy Beech construction

The Signature Heavy shells are approximately 12 mm thick beech, with African Bubinga on the interior and high-gloss Signal Red lacquer on the exterior.

These extremely substantial shells, combined with Sonor's heavy-duty Signature hardware, are characteristic of the uncompromising construction of the Signature series.

Signal Red – a rare Signature finish

The Signature series represented Horst Link-era Sonor at its most ambitious. Cost and weight clearly took second place to engineering, materials and build quality, and the series remains one of the most distinctive chapters in Sonor's history.

Signal Red Signature kits are considerably less common than the familiar Bubinga and Makassar Ebony veneer versions.

Signature kits in Signal Red are also associated with several prominent Sonor artists of the period, including Bernard Purdie, Chester Thompson, Cindy Blackman and Steve Smith.

Restoration and condition

The kit has been restored using its original components, without replacing the hardware with modern reproduction parts.

• All hardware completely removed from the shells
• Components individually cleaned and polished
• Moving parts serviced and lubricated
• Original snap-locks retained
• Original fibre washers, screws, washers and clips retained
• Chrome in exceptional condition with no significant pitting or wear
• No structural damage
• No significant cosmetic defects
• Only very limited signs of use since the restoration two years ago

Please note: The original internal bass drum muffler has been removed and is not included.

The kit is fitted with new Remo heads:

• Toms: Remo Emperor Clear batters
• Toms: Remo Ambassador Clear resonant heads
• Bass drum resonant: Remo Ambassador Clear with Sonor logo and felt strip
• Bass drum batter: Remo Powersonic with original removable damping pad

Price and shipping

This kit is priced according to its condition, originality, documented restoration, rarity and collector value.

It should not be compared directly with unrestored Signature kits showing decades of wear, compromised chrome, missing components or replacement parts. Complete Heavy Beech Signature kits are becoming increasingly difficult to find, and a Signal Red example restored to this standard is considerably less common.
