COLLINGS 470JL JULIAN LAGE SIGNATURE 2022in Antiqued Sunburst finishIf you’re checking this out you know what you’re looking at … what seems generally agreed to be one of the best guitar builds ever. Certainly the top of the Collings range. I think there’s no doubt it is a wonderful guitar, and this one is in excellent condition. I feel an idiot selling it, but we have some nasty unexpected bills to pay. It’s priced to sell asap. This finish, Antiqued Sunburst, is probably the prettiest of the lot. The Ron Ellis pickups are a story in themselves (plenty of rave reviews on YT and Reddit) and the Ebony fingerboard and C/V profile neck are a joy. The 2 pickups are "Ellisonics" (with custom adjustable height) inspired by DeArmond Dynasonics but notably different. They were developed by Ron Ellis specifically for the 470 JL. The company says the aim was great clarity, note separation and an acoustic-like character and feel, a hybrid pickup that combines a traditional Dynasonic, a P90, and a Telecaster pickup. They’re intended to cover a wide range of tones. The body is Honduran Mahogany with a Maple laminate top. Collings say the semi-hollow body (hollow but with a trestle block) is designed to give the sustain of a solid body, with the resonance and low weight of a hollowbody. The bridge is a Tune-o-matic with nylon saddles and a pinned Ebony base.Even if (like Julian Lage himself) you don’t use the Bigsby B3 vibrato that much, it gives just enough weight to balance the guitar and gives a springiness to the feel. I never really saw the point of a Bigsby before but I loved it. The guitar has a set neck, in Honduran Mahogany, with a hybrid C/V profile. OTHER DETAILED SPEC:12-inch radius.22 frets.Ebony fingerboard.Scale length 24 7/8”.Neck Joint: extra long mortise & tenon.Frets: medium, 18% Nickel-Silver.The nut is slippery Delrin, 1-11/16" wide. The neck taper is unique among Collings electrics, slightly narrower at both the lst and 12th fret than other models.Waverly tuners, in reliced Nickel, with vintage oval buttons. 16:1 ratio.Master volume and 2 tone controls.Strung with D'Addario NYXL 1149 (.011" -- .049").Armitage custom deluxe hardshell case. I’ve included a Tru-Arc aluminium bridge which for many players seems to be the favoured modification for the 470JL. It’s in the Armitage case. I bought it direct from Tim at Tru-Arc but didn’t fit it once I realised I was going to have to sell the guitar. The domed control knobs are Ebony, from Stewmac, imported via James’ Home of Tone. I got them because they look and feel great but the Collings originals are in the case if you prefer. I checked the build date with Collings: it shipped from their Austin workshop on April 27th, 2022.I’ve never gigged with it. I’m strictly a bedroom player! Since I bought it, the guitar has been wall-hung in our non-smoking house in a room without central heating, out of direct sunlight. It has been thoroughly checked over and set-up, recently, by my regular local v experienced luthier. Only selling within the UK, sorry to say. Sending overseas from here is just so much hassle at the moment. I’m in NW London. Very happy to meet halfway at a train station or motorway services.
