A very rare opportunity to purchase what is a 'Holy Grail' amp to many and also the identical model to that which Mark Knopfler played 'Sultans of Swing' on - a 1963 Fender Vibrolux.
Fender produced these only between 1961-63, with the 'Brownface' series amps following the 'tweed' period, just before they started using black tolex. The very best, in my opinion.

The tube chart reads 'MJ', comfortably putting the date of manufacture as October 1963.
This is further the UK export version of the amp, meaning that it does not require a step-down transformer.
This was purchased by the original owner at Selmer in London and includes the original catalogue page which the owner enthusiastically highlighted with a pen ahead of its purchase. At the time, it cost 90 Guineas (about £100).
I received this in just about original electronic condition, save for a replaced speaker. The amp appeared never to have really been worked on (the death cap was still attached - naturally it has now been disconnected). Present were all of the original caps and valves and the amp hadn't been meddled with, largely thanks to being in a single person's possession for the past 60 years. I took it to Martin at Coopersonic and insisted that it be made safe but kept original wherever possible. The caps while present, were on their last legs and starting to ooze - they were replaced by Martin though I've retained the originals (pictured) which will be included in the sale. Valves appear all original or at least period, those being (as per Martin's notes): Preamp: 2x 7025 RCA, 2x 12AX7 Tung-Sol. 6L6GCs are RCA and reasonably well matched, GZ34 rectifier is Amperex.
One knob (intensity) appears non-original, but is a good repro. The plug appeared non-original and failed safety tests so this was replaced at the same time by Coopersonic (also included, pictured). Given the speaker wasn't original, I spared no expense on the replacement which is a fantastic top-of-the-line Jensen 12 inch (Italian-made) alnico 5 speaker, which is about as close to the original speaker quality as one could hope for. I have the full service history for its lifetime and naturally will include this in the sale / forward to any interested buyers.
Cosmetically, it is very clean. The metal parts have naturally aged, though the tolex and weave remain in excellent condition, tear-free with minor discoloration and there is nothing in the way of any 'damage'. I do not think it was ever gigged or even left the house under the original owner. The handle is original and present. Also included is a vibrato foot pedal, which looks to be a repurposed contemporary Watkins/Selmer unit - which makes sense given where it was originally purchased.
It goes without saying but the sound of this amp is unparalleled. Gorgeous cleans, rich vibrato and an incredible drive sound when pushed beyond the 5-7. It can get very, very loud, though can be easily used with an attenuator (thanks to the speaker out jack) to achieve its fantastic drive sound at domestic volumes. The 'Bright' and 'Normal' channels are genuinely handy, offering a little treble boost/warmer tone depending on your preference.
Fully-serviced as of February 2026, given a clean bill of health. Issue-free, largely original, un-meddled with an crucially - the UK export version, so no need for a cumbersome step-down transformer. Just plug it in and play!
I'll be sad to see this amp go, but what a pleasure it has been having it in. Naturally, I would prefer this is collected, though if you are in the UK mainland and a reasonable distance of Nottingham I shall see that this is hand-delivered to you. Please get in touch if interested!
Free shipping to mainland UK via Parcelforce 24, more photos available on my site. List price includes postage and all respective platform fees. I am always open to reasonable offers - if you have any questions or queries then please get in touch!
