Here is a very, very rare instrument from February 1964. The only one for sale in the UK and US!
It is a Bavarian-made Framus Hootenanny 12-string acoustic guitar, the same model and year as used by John Lennon in 1965. The only exception is that mine is in sunburst and has the Spanish-style headstock design.
Identical specimens to John’s guitar are “rare as hen’s teeth” and fetch anywhere between 4-8k, so this one is the next best thing as it is otherwise accurate.
Things to look out for when trying to match John’s Hootenanny include: the straight-armed trapeze tailpiece, the ‘short fret’ (by the sound hole) and the unique veneered rosette.
As Framus didn’t mass produce their instruments, it’s extremely rare to have a guitar with quite so many similarities to John’s. It’s also very rare to find a 12-string Framus that actually functions and is playable (as they aren’t the most well-built guitars)
Lennon used his guitar extensively during the HELP! and Rubber Soul albums and also used it in the HELP! film in 1965. Interestingly, George Harrison also recorded with John’s guitar during this period. The exact whereabouts of this guitar is presently unknown, however.
My Framus is in good shape other than the standard marks that you’d expect to find on a guitar from 1964. Some buckle rashes here and there, scratches, and the paint/material from the headstock name has gone.
No neck or soundboard repairs, no splits or binding rot, and importantly… low action between 1st and 12th frets! Which makes it very playable and enjoyable to listen too. It’s got a big, balanced sound which is very unique and authentically 60s.
When collecting Beatle-instruments, Gretsch’s, Rickenbackers, Hofners, Gibsons, etc; are usually fairly easy to acquire. However, this is one of those rare guitars that people usually never see. Therefore, it would make a Fab collection that extra bit more special.
It has a rare Kay 60s hardcase which is very valuable by itself! Thanks for looking! (open to offers so feel free to get in touch)
