Giardinelli is one of the old guard brands of mouthpieces. Started in New York City, the Giardinelli shop was one of the first to offer custom mouthpiece work and a range of sizes with superior designs to what was available at the time. The older generation of players still remember Giardinelli mouthpieces as being one of the premier choices. They were surprisingly comfortable, with a more rounded inside rim edge than other models had.
Commercial and jazz trumpet players find the 6 and 7 series mouthpieces to be most popular. Lead playing specialists may prefer 10 to 17. Symphonic players prefer a rim around size 3 or so. The Giardinelli mouthpieces have a C-style cup in which the cup sides are gently curved inward for fullness of tone, and they are available in several cup depths. They tend to be very comfortable and may feel bigger than the measurements suggest.
The #3 was the backbore that Maynard Ferguson used on his piece as well. The NY backbore made by Warburton is a #3 design. Some might find they over blow the #3 if they use it on too small of a horn. If you have a relaxed and efficient approach, this backbore works well.
