Ever seen an old wedding video shot in the 70's or 80's? That warbly, almost underwater sound of old, stretched out tape might make speech unintelligible, but boy does it sound great on an electric guitar.
Rather than aiming, like so many others, to give you access to the sound of a classic studio-grade reel-to-reel-style tape machine, the VHS is intended to give you the sound of consumer-grade bargain-bin re-recordable video tapes, just like mom recorded your first steps on.
What makes this pedal shine is it's incredibly versatile modulation, and the ease with which an amazing sound can be stumbled upon. Dial in some wow/flutter with the Depth and Rate knobs, and get anything from some light wobble to a sea-sick chorus-like sound on the repeated echos and phrases.
The control panel features the following dials:
'Time': sets the length of the tape/delay line
'Level': sets the volume of the echoed repeats
'Intensity': controls the volume of the repeated echos. Self-oscillation is easy to obtain with Intensity dialed up past 8, but clear, non-oscillating repeats are just as easy to get with it slightly lower.
'Depth' sets the width of modulation that gets applied to the echo, with '0' being dry, non-modulated repeats, '10' being nearly an entire semitone of pitch modulation, and a great range of natural, organic aged-tape sounds in between.
'Speed' sets the rate of wobble, from a slow 'wow' to a quick 'flutter' and beyond! There is much you can do with the Depth and speed controls, giving you access to a great deal of vintage-sounding fun.
The LEDs are as follows:
Red LED (top): Lit when the effect is engaged, off when the effect is bypassed.
Yellow LED (bottom): Pulses at rate of current modulation setting, with the brightness of the pulses indicating the Depth of modulation. Always on unless depth is set to '0'.
True bypass operation means that your bypass signal remains untouched!
Top-mounted jacks and Standard 9v Center-Negative DC Barrel Jack input make this unit truly pedalboard friendly.
Note that this is unit #001, as it is the only one currently in existence. More will be available in the future when I make them, but this is the only current unit, so once it's gone, it's gone for an undefined period of time. Who knows? Maybe this will be worth big money some day.
