Description:

If you're looking at this, you're likely hunting for the ultimate in pure, pristine tube amplification. Designed by the legendary Vic Keary, the Thermionic Culture Earlybird 4 is widely considered one of the finest, cleanest, and most powerful multi-channel valve preamps ever constructed. It uses a unique Class-A push-pull valve topology to give you insanely low noise and massive, lifelike depth.

Thermionic Culture Earlybird 4 was officially introduced and launched in March 2010, the exceptionally low serial number of this unit, EB4/016 means it was hand-wired during the very first production batch.

The unit is in flawless working order, sounds absolutely magnificent, and has been strictly looked after in a clean, smoke-free studio environment. Cosmically, it is in excellent condition with just some tiny, minor rack marks that are practically invisible once it is bolted into your studio furniture.

Tech Specs

  • True Push-Pull Class-A All-Valve Design: Delivers an astonishingly low-distortion signal path (<0.01%) while preserving pure organic analogue warmth and wide stereo imaging. [1, 2]
  • Custom Sowter Transformers: Massively over-spec'd custom input and output transformers built in conjunction with Brian Sowter, ensuring virtually zero phase shift and endless headroom (+32dB output level). [1, 2]
  • Variable Sonic Flavour: Step the mic gain up and pull the variable output trims back to gently introduce musical 2nd-order harmonics, or open up the output for the most natural, transparent acoustic tracking imaginable. [1]
  • Precision Control: Stepped gain controls from 42dB to 62dB (with an additional 20dB pad), 2-position passive high-pass filters, and switchable input impedance to perfectly match anything from ribbon mics to modern condenser capsules. [1]
  • Classic Metering: A beautiful pair of illuminated VU meters that can be easily switched to monitor channels 1&2 or 3&4 on the fly, backed by peak overload LEDs. [1, 2]
  • Point-to-Point Handwired: Entirely hand-built in the UK with meticulous traditional point-to-point wiring—zero circuit boards in the main signal path to degrade your audio. [1]

Voltage Note

The unit operates natively on standard UK/EU 220V/230V mains power.

Price & Offers

These units now retail brand new for over £6,200 via premium dealers. I am letting this one go at a very fair price to help fund an upcoming equipment shift in the studio, so I've priced it for a straightforward sale.
