Solid State Logic Bus+ Next-Generation Stereo Bus CompressorThe Solid State Logic SSL Bus+ takes the iconic Solid State Logic Bus Compressor to a new level by combining classic sound with expanded functionality and new features. Powered by high-performance 2181 THAT VCAs, this two-channel analog dynamics processor offers four modes of operation, three coloration options, new attack and release options, and a built-in two-band dynamic EQ, all with stepped controls for perfect recall between sessions. Equally at home on your mix bus, drum bus, or even part of your mastering chain, the SSL Bus+ delivers legendary SSL "glue" with more precision and flexibility than ever. See what the SSL Bus+ has to offer and learn how it can elevate your mixes with classic sound and modern versatility. AN ENHANCED VERSION OF THE LEGENDARY SSL BUS COMPRESSOR Solid State Logic's Bus Compressor first appeared in the console centre section of the SSL 4000 B in 1976, and it has remained a centerpiece of SSL consoles ever since, influencing countless world-famous productions. The SSL Bus+ continues that lineage, delivering classic SSL "glue" thanks to high-performance 2181 THAT VCAs in a 100% analog signal path with digital control for perfect software-based recall. With the precision of software control and the convenience of stepped controls, the Solid State Logic Bus+ meets (and exceeds) the demands of high-level studios. CLASSIC STEREO, S/C STEREO, DUAL MONO, AND MID-SIDE MODES Four modes let you match the compressor's behavior to the source. Classic Stereo delivers the linked stereo behavior of the original SSL Bus Compressor, while Σ S/C Stereo (short for sum side-chain stereo) routes detection through an alternative path for a different feel on the same material. Dual Mono splits the unit into two independent compressors so you can treat two tracks at the same time. Mid-Side works on the center and the sides separately, letting you tighten up the center without narrowing the stereo image. Since all of these modes share one signal path, you can switch between them on the fly and hear exactly how the compression characteristics change. NEW ATTACK AND RELEASE TIME OPTIONS The original SSL Bus Compressor offered a small set of fixed time constants, but the Bus+ introduces a few new options for added flexibility. Extra Attack settings let you decide how much transient information gets through before gain reduction takes hold, from tight peak control to a slower response that leaves snare and kick punch intact. The expanded Release options include the familiar program-dependent Auto setting plus a new Auto 2 curve that reacts differently to complex material. Negative ratios sit alongside the standard choices, producing creative pumping effects and firm control over unusually loud signals. THREE COLOR OPTIONS: 4K MODE, LOW THD MODE, AND F/B MODE The Bus+ features three coloration options, giving you more choices than ever to shape the sound of your mixes. 4K Mode switches the VCA from balanced to unbalanced operation (the same way the Bus Compressor was implemented in 4000-series consoles), and adds an adjustable amount of variable harmonic distortion for grit and thickness. LOW THD Mode modifies the sidechain to limit the low-frequency distortion that compression can create, especially with fast release settings. F/B Mode takes the sidechain feed from a feed-back position after the main gain-reduction VCA, a feedback topology that alters the compression characteristics toward a more relaxed response instead of the traditional grab. Use one for a subtle shift, or stack all three for a sound the original could never produce. DYNAMIC ANALOG EQUALIZER: D-EQ The D-EQ is the first analog dynamic equalizer Solid State Logic has ever built, and it runs in parallel with the compressor. Each of its two bands raises or lowers gain in proportion to how far the signal reaches above the threshold, reacting dynamically to the frequency content of your music. You get 16 frequency points per band, a 31-position control that sweeps between compress and expand, an adjustable range from 0.5 dB to 15 dB, and three time constants: Nominal, Fast, or Auto. The high-frequency band switches from shelf to bell when you need it, G-Series mode gives the LF band a second-order filter with undershoot and overshoot, and either band can be bypassed on its own. FLEXIBLE DESIGN FOR MODERN WORKFLOWS Solid State Logic designed the Bus+ to drop into a hybrid rig where software mixing and analog hardware work side by side. Processing order is configurable, so the Bus Compressor can sit before or after the D-EQ. External side-chain inserts let you trigger compression on one track from another or insert additional processors into the detector path. A variable side-chain high-pass filter reaches up to 300 Hz in 10 Hz steps, keeping heavy low end from driving gain reduction. A Mix knob gives you instant parallel processing, and Auto-Sleep puts the unit into standby when it sits idle. TRANSIENT EXPANDER Solid State Logic tucked an unlockable Transient Expander inside the Bus+ for restoring and enhancing transients rather than taming them. On a drum submix, it brings back the snap that heavy bus compression can flatten, and on a full mix it can bring more definition to a dense arrangement. Because the Transient Expander sits in the same analog signal path as everything else, it stays coherent with the rest of the processing.
